don't ask, don't tell is gone!

I logged on to FB this morning to see that my BIL was listed as in a relationship with his boyfriend.  First, I freaked out because he's in the military, and I couldn't figure out why he would announce this somewhere so public while DADT was still in place.  Then I saw an article saying that it's gone!  So happy he is free to openly be himself Big Smile

Re: don't ask, don't tell is gone!

  • It is about freaking time.

Yours is the third story like that I have read today. I am so happy for all the people who can finally be open about their lives.

  • Finally!! Now, can we move on to discussing other things besides what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home? (Not directed at you, OP! A general statement to media, etc)

  • That's awesome!  I know another person in the military who is gay but couldn't talk about it.  I'll have to keep an eye out on his status to see if he changes it.

I never cared if people are straight or gay while enlisted in the military.  Either way, they're defending our country and my right for freedom and it's something that I could never do because I'm not brave enough.  So that, in and of itself, is heartwarming to me.  Thanks soldiers...ALL of you!

  • I think it's awesome that it's gone. It's taken too long to get to this point. Being gay has no bearing on how you defend the country. I'm glad it's no longer an issue and people in the military can be comfortable being themselves.

  • Someone I know just posted this on Facebook tonight:

"Its something now aint it what was wrong witn don't ask don't tell guess it aint enough to put one or two on every TV show now we got to broadcast it in the armed forces too some things go to far"

I had to type, delete, type, delete, walk away, argue with myself over whether or not I should even bother, and then come back before I could type a coherent response that wasn't laden with profanity.

    *sigh*

I don't know why you were worried about a coherent response to that.  I had to read it three times to figure out what it said.  Do people not use punctuation anymore?

I agree with Becky.  I had to read it very slowly and try to figure out WTH they were saying.  I almost thought we may have had a mutual friend, because I have a fried who has status' like that on the regular.
