Squirrels are making my Dog crazy...

... He is going to have a heart attack!

There is a squirrel nest in our chimney, I have been hearing scratching and "barking" noises today. There are also leaves and sticks poking out of the flu , so there is something living in there, for sure. I have an appointment for a pest removal company to come out tomorrow night. (The soonest they can get out here) They were really helpful and knowledgeable, although I wish they could get out here sooner.

Sam is a nervous dog by nature. And anything that moves, he has to chase it. (I think that he has terrier in him) His energy is making me nervous. I hate to see him start shaking near the fireplace. :( Poor guy. Any tips on calming him down? I think we are going to go for a long walk really soon.

Re: Squirrels are making my Dog crazy...

  • Distract him with a kong?  My terrier loves moving things too (except here it is mostly rabbits).  She'll sit at the back door all day and "protect" the yard from them.  She only gets distracted by food though...kongs, her puzzle, and long walks.  Good luck.
  • This helps a lot. Sam loves to sit at the window and bark at anything that passes by. I don't know how to train him away from that yet.

We walked around our little block a couple of times and I gave him a peanut butter kong, which should distract him for the rest of the night. I also put one in the freezer for tomorrow.

I am thinking of also keeping the tv music station on tonight and turning on some soothing music. Is that too crazy?

I just need to say that you had my attention the moment that you put squirrel nest and chimney in the same sentence.

I hope that your dog is okay. I'm sure he'll probably just tire himself out and sleep really well. Unless the squirrels break into the house....

  • I feel your pain.  The squirrels however are not in the chimney but they do sit in the tree right in front of the window and on some days they seem to mock both of the dogs.  It is like they know the dogs can't get to them.  I have re-hung the curtains many times thanks to those rats with fluffy tails!!
