Runners I have a Q.

Hey ladies.

My 5K is Sunday and I just want to see if anyone has any last minute tips for me.

Also I know I can't run on an empty stomach but I don't want too much food either what should I eat the morning of the run? The run starts at 8:30 and we will have to leave the house about 7:15 to get there by 8.

TIA!

Re: Runners I have a Q.

  • Well, I'm not a runner, but I did a 5K. once. hah.

I found the best thing for me to eat before running was like a handful of almonds and dried cranberries. Protein plus carbs plus sugar but nothing to slosh around.

And good luck - you'll do great!

Pretty much this. Have pasta/carbs the night before. A granola bar with nuts and fruit in it would be good for the day of. Or a bagel with peanut butter.

  • Here is what I eat:

pb, honey with 1/2 slice of banana topped with a drizzle of honey on an english muffin (you can put it as a sandwich and eat it as you get ready). I have done this before every race and I have never had any stomach issues. I also have a cup of coffee too. I know this is not for everyone but it gets me up in the morning.

    Some tips:

Lay out your clothes the night before. Down to your race bib (with the pins!) to your undies, socks, shoes, ipod, etc.

Not only eating the day of the race is important, the night before is too. Don't drink too much (I usually have a beer or wine to calm my nerves. Nothing too heavy.

Oh and I hope this happens to you but make sure well, you go #2. Nothing like having to go in a porta potty 5 mins before your race.Tongue Tied. Not like I am speaking from experience or anything....

and have fun too!! GL Paige you will do AWESOME!

  • THanks ladies! I appreciate the tips!
  • What the other ladies said is pretty good!  Have something solid, non sloshy.  When I was in school it would be eggs and toast.  A bagel or banana would do fine as well.  I would always cramp if I ate too close to race time, so unless your body is fine with it, I'd eat first thing in the morning with at least a half hour before the run.
  • With a 5k I'd go out slow and steady (the first half-mile you'll probably be dodging people anyway) and then try to kick it into high gear at the 3 mile mark (with .1 to go) so that I had nothing left at the finish.

My pre-run fuel is usually a slice of bread or a sandwich thin smeared with almond butter.  I also try to drink water and for a race I'll have a small skim milk latte to try to "get things going" (aka #2).

Like Amy said, you don't want to go #2 on the course so try to go ahead of time.  Make sure to have fun, look around at all the spectators and just take in the race atmosphere!  Afterwards be sure to drink water and celebrate - a 5k is impressive!  Smile
