The post from the other day got me intreguied and Im curious to see where all my money goes so I wanted to start a spread sheet to track my spending.  I know I will end up forgetting some areas so...

Re: Budget Categories?

  • These are our budget categories:

    • Mortgage (including insurance costs)
    • Cable/Internet
    • Electricity/Gas
    • Water/Garbage
    • Food (includes groceries, eating out and toiletry type items)
    • Gas (for car)-Me
    • Gas (for car)-DH
    • Car Payment-DH (I have no car loan)
    • Insurance (Cars)
    • Cell Phones
    • Student Loans-Me
    • Student Loans-DH
    • Debt Repayment-Me (we both came into our marriage with a little bit of debt, and felt like it was important to each try to repay our own debt, even though we fully stand by the idea that it's "our debt" and "our money".  It's what works for us.
    • Debt Repayment-DH
    • Entertainment
    • Fun Money-Me
    • Fun Money-DH
    • Car Maintenance and Registrations (into savings account)
    • Gifts (Into savings account)
    • Savings (into savings account)

And this is all after we have retirement and health insurance taken out of our paychecks!

  • I highly suggest using mint.com.  It's a website that you can link all of your bank accounts, loans, credit cards, etc and catagorize everything.  It really helps you create a budget (everything is already in categories!) then shows you where you are within the budget whenever you login.  There's an ap for it too Stick out tongue

I agree! I love Mint!  But we also have a more detailed budget that we created in excel.

  • Same categories, but I also add city taxes, association fees.  Even though those come around once or twice a year, I like to create pocket of money for them so that I'm not scrambling to find the funds to pay it off.

This is definitely a good idea.  Our taxes are included in our mortgage payment, but we do have to pay our HOA fees in December or January, so I should add that to my budget!  Thanks!

  • Just some other ideas thoughts:

Maybe divide food, so a line for grocercies & a seperate line for eating out.

    Clothing

    Christmas gifts

  • I think PP covered almost everything. We have a dog so she gets her own line on our budget.

I agree with this.  I would also separate "household" items if you can -- things like toilet paper, cleaning solutions, laundry detergent, etc.

For us, Mint also divides things like Home Improvement, Home Goods, Furnishings, etc.  It's pretty cool how minutely you can break things down if you want to.

  • We use a shared Google document spreadsheet to record our purchases, and it's been working out great.  It's nice because we can both access it online from where ever.

    Our categories:
    Rent
    Tithe
    Car maintenence
    Car insurance
    Gas
    Electric
    Fun money (me)
    Fun money (DH)
Random food (me)  [for misc things like Starbucks, running out for lunch at work, etc.  We could count it in something else, but it works best for us to have it separate)
    Random food (DH)
    Grocery
    Grooming
Household (for random decorations, ink cartridges, toilet paper--basically house stuff that's not groceries)
    Entertainment/Eating out
    Gifts
    Cable/Internet
    Phone
    Savings

We've been budgeting for about 1.5 years now, and I love it.  It's been really helpful to know where the money is going and I find it freeing to know I can spend anything within x amount of dollars in any given category, and still be where we should be with our money.

The only reason we don't is because it's actually a pretty small line on our budget.  DH travels a lot for work, so it's just me a lot of the time.  I don't eat out very often, and I purchase the household items at the same place I buy groceries.  It's just what works for us!
