Alton Brown's "Fanifesto"

Amusing reading (since I'm seeking out amusement today).  It seems pretty reasonable to me, but makes me wonder how many crazycakes fans he's met through the years...

It also reminds me that common courtesy isn't so common (otherwise who in their right mind would feel to nab a quasi-celeb in the restroom?).

  • can you repost the link?  I receive an error message when I click the one in the post.
  • I think he's just being fair.  I went to college in an area with a high celeb: citizen ratio and I know it was hard for them to grocery shop, rent movies or go out to ice cream with their kids, etc.  Thus, I'd never go up to a celebrity/ cable-brity/ whomever in a "normal" non-book signing or deliberate public appearance situation.

None of his rules are rude- he's just being honest, which if you like AB, you probably appreciate.

I think the people who get offended at this are also most likely to cross those lines, so maybe it is just his way of preemptively striking them away from his tour?

  • I think it's a tad ridiculous to have these laid out 'rules' about book signings.  I mean, yeah, don't go up to him in the bathroom, yes, that makes sense.  But, the no camera phone stuff is crap man.  If you don't know how to use your camera phone chances are you aren't all that quick with your real camera either.  Yeah the basics are easier, point and shoot, but with multiple settings on even basic cameras now it's not always quicker.  I can guarantee I can use my phone to take a picture faster than my grandma and her real camera.

It's a book signing, it's a giant autograph session, ban all pictures if you want, but this is what makes fans happy so if you, as a celebrity, are going to have a book signing you just deal with it.  Stop having them if you don't like it so much.  It strikes me as a lot of ego for a guy I had the impression that was pretty cool and down to earth.

  • I like it. I think his rules are reasonable. People can be crazy and I don't blame him for setting some boundaries.

I think the issue with that is when the person wants to be IN the picture - so they hand their cell to another person to take the pic of them and AB.  And that makes sense.  I know MY cell's camera, but I've been flustered before when handed someone else's phone to take a picture, and not knowing the delay, where to click, etc.

  • I barely can use my own cell phone to take pics and I would be utterly lost of someone handed me their smartphone to take a pic since I don't have one and have never used one.
