How often do you talk with your MIL/FIL during deployments?

Do they call you to check in? How often? Or do you not really hear from them until husband gets home? Or do you talk to them but you have to call them?

Just curious!

Re: How often do you talk with your MIL/FIL during deployments?

  • If I want to talk to them I have to call them. Last time he was gone during Christmas so I called them on that day, but thats it.

  • We only talk to MIL on holidays as it is (K and Bean's birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day and sometimes Easter) so when K's not here, I don't talk to her at all. Actually, sometimes on Mother's Day, we call her, she doesn't answer so we leave a message, and she never calls back. So, yea, I don't feel bad about not calling her during deployment.

I do, however, talk to several of K's other family members while he's gone. His Papaw, Aunt & Uncle, and sister. I probably talked to them about once a month each, more around the holidays.

  • I called FIL and SMIL every Sunday. His mom I talked to several times a week, but we're very close.
  • We normally touch base every week or so when Joe is gone and I think we're pretty even in who contacts who.  MIL hesitates to call much when DH is home because she doesn't want to interrupt our couple time, so she normally waits for us to call her.

  • I talk to FIL about once a month either he calls or I do, usually to arrange a time I can bring the kids over for a visit (they live 2 hours from us). I never talk to MIL during deployment we do not get along and she likes to talk bad about me so she gets to see the kids when DH is here to supervise.

  • DH likes me to keep in touch with them while hes gone. I try but they rarely answer the phone.

  • I find that I either call, e-mail or text once a week.  I just like to check in.  H asked me to call his dad and talk football with him this season since he is not able to.  It is not planned it just happens that way.
  • I only talk to them to plan 1 day for each holiday (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and then the kids' birthdays.

  • We have been lucky and have been able to carry on an email conversation most days during both deployments.  We scheduled phone calls for Sunday mornings (my time) during the last deployment.  We're both horrible phone conversationalists and the delay and static really irritate us both.

ETA:  Clearly I didn't read the whole title before posting.  It's been a rough morning.

Anyway...I talked to them maybe once a month at the most.  My MIL just cries about anything add in a deployment and it's a non-stop sob fest for 12 months.  I avoid it at all costs.

  • I rarely, if ever, call my MIL when H is gone.  She'll call me once a week or so to check in, and only sometimes will I answer.  She doesn't listen when I talk, so it gets really annoying.  Like one day last deployment I called to tell her H got the care package his family had sent.  She called me the next day at 2am my time completely frantic because she hadn't heard from him in a week and thought something was wrong.  I freaking just told you yesterday that I talked to him.  So I usually just let it go to voicemail.  She leaves 2-3 minute voicemails about nothing, and at the end feels like she talked to me so it works.

I don't have a relationship with my FIL, and H doesn't really either.  I met him the night before our wedding, and we never hear from him.

  •  We talk about once a week, or so, just depending on how busy we are.

  • I talk to MIL maybe once a month or so. She's usually the one who calls me. I don't get along with FIL (they're divorced) so I think he finally got the message I don't want to deal/talk to him while hubby is gone. Hallelujah!

  • So Im trying to delete my ppost because I didnt read the question right..lol But anyways, I talke to my MIL once every 2 weeks or so and same with FIL. Ill usually call to see how they are doing.. My FIL calls me more than my MIL does...

  • Well we dont have a relationship with DHs mom, and his dad just came back into his life a couple years ago. DH only talks to him every couple months. So I guess my answer is, never. Which is sad, but I dont want DD to have a relationship with his mom either and I would be happy if I never had to see her again. (long story). And his Dad isnt the "father" type. Which is weird because he has a bunch of kids with a few different people..and some of them are the same age! eek!

  • I hear from them maybe once a month, even though they live about 10 minutes away from me. And that's usually via Facebook.

  • DH should be deploying next year.  I don't plan on communicating with the ILs much.  We don't get along and I only communicate with them if we see them in person.  DH hardly talks to them either.  DH has already told me that he doesn't want them knowing anything.  They are the type of people who will post anything and everything all over FB, on school and church bulletins, and in the newspaper.
  • My ILs moved here a few years ago to be closer to them.  I usually talk to them on FB when I need to.  We see them a couple times a month and continue with that when H is gone.  MIL has been odd lately, so I haven't called her much.

That sounds perfect! I doubt it'll be like that for this next trip, sadly. I just hate talking on the phone so much, unless it's H or Ojo actually.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • We've stayed kind of close so far...this is MH's first deployment so I think we're still kind of feeling everything out...over the summer I would go over to visit 3 or 4 times a month but since school recently started my schedules changed quite a bit and we haven't been able to get together....but what I'm having a hard time with now (and a small part of the reason I haven't been over or called much) is I found out MH's R&R date and I'm soooo excited but he wants to surprise his parents and sisters and I'm really awful at keeping secrets =P
