What color?

I'm going to be painting the kitchen next week and I still can't decide what color!  The cabinets are oak and I'm going to leave them because I just don't have the patience to re-do them.

Here are some pictures to help you get an idea of the colors in rooms by the kitchen.  Old pics, but the only ones I have on my work comp.

The kitchen opens into the dining room and entryway, both are this color yellow:

The curtains in the dining room (Pier 1, no longer online) are red, orange and green.  I would love to do an orange, but I think it would make the oak cabinets look even more orangey.

I'm thinking of doing a green.  This is the green in the living room, and I really like it.  But I'm not sure if it'll look good in the kitchen.

What color would you paint the kitchen?  Same green as the living room to keep it consistent?  A green that's a little bit darker/more olive-y?  Or another color all together?

(I don't want to do white because the white wainscotting in the dining room isn't a true white and the colors would definitely clash).

Re: What color?

  • That's a tough one, but I really like the yellow you have up already.
  • i like the yellow better than the green. your house is really nice (jelly).

    what color are your countertops?

They're hideous light tan laminate.  We want to put new ones on, we just haven't figured out how to yet!

The kitchen floors are the most hideous green tile you've ever seen!  Those are getting torn up the same weekend I paint.

Thanks.  It's been a looong work in progress and those pictures were taken about a year ago.

The kitchen is light yellow now and I hate it...that's why I'm hesitant to put that bright yellow in there.

  • I don't think I'd do another green because of the green you have. I'd either do it the same green or a neutral.

Oak cabinets are so hard - I agree with you there. What about a grey? Or a greige (like a beige that leans more toward grey than orange/brown?).  Or possibly a grey/blue?

Found this picture of orange and it's surprisingly not bad:

    Here's a grey:

I like this green, but only if you're going to paint over the other green:

  • Or...what about a lighter brown? Not chocolate, but a cool brown tone?

  • I like that grey color you posted!  Did you find that in a place that you might be able to find the name?

The kitchen was a brown when we moved in and I really didn't like it, but it was dark. Plus the floors are going to be a tanish and the countertops probably will be too, once we re-do those.  Sooo much to consider!

Thanks for the pics!  I know DH would love that reddish-orange one you showed.

  • Our kitchen/dining is green and I really like it...I think it's a tad softer than in your living room and would probably say to do that since you'll have the oak as a contrast.

But I like grey color as well

  • I like the gray that Karebear posted.  We painted our kitchen a brick red/maroon color and it made our Oak cabinets look so much better than they did before we painted.
  • I like the yellow. But for a change I'd consider a soft sky blue or something on the lines of tan.

  • I just googled "what paint color with oak cabinets" and copied the images.

Sorry! I'm doing really bad at putting links up today. I just copy the picture and run!
