It pays to try to cancel memberships

I signed up for freecreditreport.com and free score.com a while back. I had made some stupid credit mistakes early on and I was trying to monitor myself and increase my credit score. I really liked these tools but each month I was paying $16.95 for freecreditreport.com and $29.95 for freescore.com. I just kept forgetting to pick up the phone to call and cancel these services before I got billed each month.

So I called freecreditreport.com told them I wanted to cancel and they took my bill down to $7.95 for the next 2 yrs. Then I called freescore and they dropped theirs to $9.95 for as long as I keep my account. Ill actually probably call freecreditreport.com back and cancel it all together b/c I really dont need both of these services.  It kind of pisses me off that I had been paying $47 a month and I could have been paying $18. Just goes to show you that you don't know until you ask.

Re: It pays to try to cancel memberships

  • I just sign up for them to see my score, then immediately cancel them before I can get billed. I haven't checked in a year because I know it's bad now. So long, perfect credit :( Thank goodness I never plan on buying a house! lol
  • I signed up for Free Credit Report over the summer just to see and the next day I called and cancelled (since the first 7 days were free) and they offered to lower it to 7.95. Glad you did that and lowered your bills!
  • Lifelock is $99 for the year and they send you a copy of your credit report on a yearly basis. Any changes to your credit is an alert they send you. I would also suggest logging into myfico.

  • you are allowed a free credit report every year just fyi

but I know what you mean because we just switched to uverse over cox and when I called to cancel our bill is about 175 (after I took stuff off and it will now be about 135) she was like well I can give you the cable and internet for 95 for the next 12 months...and the phone is like 15 so I was like wow you can give me that much off?

She's like why didn't you call and I said I have been with you since 05 why should I HAVE to call to get 40% off my bill when I've never missed a payment and you're overpriced...she then apologized and immediately cancelled us haha
