DH and I were invited to a wedding this fall that is black tie. Now I know what that means for men; tux (not necessarily with tails) but there you go, easy peasy.
I always thought black tie for women meant floor length dress, but when I Googled last night just to be sure, according to Martha Stewart's website (who apparently consulted etiquette people??) black tie for women has morphed into "fancy cocktail dress" nothing too short, but just below the knee or tea length is ok.
I'm sort of conflicted...I don't want to be under dressed, but if I'm the only lass in a floor length gown besides the bride, I'll feel reallly stupid. Not to mention, I don't own a floor length gown and will need to buy one. Which is fine, IF that's still the "rule."
Thoughts?
WWYD?
Re: Opinions/Thoughts Please!
Hmmmm tricky tricky,
Black tie Does mean floor length gown, but unfortunately the youth of today have gotten lazy and indeed morphed it into 'cocktail'.
Being from New Zealand, we follow the British train of thought, and it saddens me to see short dresses at a black tie event.
But, you don't want to be the odd one out, so go with Martha.
OR!!! I could post you my grey dress......
My own thoughts would depend on the time of day the wedding is. I know black tie is generally reserved for night, but I've heard and seen people do black tie during the afternoon as well.
I think if the wedding is scheduled early afternoon/before the dinner hour, I would probably wear a shorter dress but make sure that it was super fancy. If the wedding is a night, I'd have no reservations wearing a long dress. I guarantee there will be other adults in attendance that will be wearing long dresses.
Do the creep.
This wins.
But so, ok, we're a tad divided now...it seems...hah. I think you all have good points...meeeh.
Let me see what I can do...the photos on my phone don't do it justice and I want a fair vote! It's from white house black market back when we were all engaged...and it's adorable and playful and classy (IMO) and surprisingly comfy.
In the meantime, here the shoes, except in black. This photo of them in brown shows their details better. Sorry it's huge!
Here's a link to the shoes also, usually when I PIP it never works :-(
