Give it to me straight- how bad are MA winters
Do I need to get a big parka and Sorel boots? I know you get a butt load of snow. DH read that Worcester got like the 22nd most snowfall last year. If that is true, I am ready to put in for a transfer to Pheonix.

Yup, he was born that way.

Re: Give it to me straight- how bad are MA winters
They are just long.
The city of Boston is great about plowing and keeping sidewalks clear. With that said, I had some Sorel boots that cam in handy.
I would definitely have warm coats- I had a dressy one like this
Then I had a ski parka that I would use if it was really wet-snowing and for walking the dog. It had a fleece jacket that zipped up inside of it, so I could use just the fleece, or I could use just the shell, which was a good rain jacket too, or I could use both for extra warmth.
Uggs were my main commuting shoes during the winter, but not if it was wet out.
Pup,
According to my DH, the winters in PA (Wilkes-Barre) are worse. MA generally does not get as cold because of the ocean air (per DH again).
Now last winter was pretty bad, and even people I talk to who have lived here all their lives will say so. But even then, tons of snow (which I love), the bad part for me was the longer periods of cold weather. But the other years before that were OK, even for this Florida girl. You should be fine
Punky, I have similar coats to both you talked about and 2 pairs of Uggs. I figured the temp would be similar to Philly, but the snow is what is getting me.
I would get Doug a sweater- P had a few, but I especially liked the fleece one from Orvis. I got her name monogrammed on it. It is red and very cute.
I also carried a paw shaped wash cloth with me because if she accidentally stepped in rock salt, she would hold her paw up, I could wipe it off easily so we could keep walking.
Wilkes-Barre gets much colder and more snow then here, but I have something to compare off of.
I hope this winter is better than last year, but am not holding my breath.
He has one:
But I will probably get him a more all weather one. He got a jacket last winter, so we are good there. Great idea about the cloth. He is a big baby.
Oh I don't see how MA would be *that* much worse than PA
The only thing I really hated doing was shoveling.
Hey, any excuse to shop works for me!
I think PA is worse because they suck at plowing the roads and clearing the sidewalks. I lived in PA for 5 years growing up and went to Penn State for college. They don't even start plowing until the snow stops, so everything gets shut down. Here, they plow every couple of hours during big storms so things get moving much sooner.
Basically, like others said, it's just LONG. And Uggs may not be good enough - get some real snow boots
Good to know they are better about the plowing. That makes a huge difference. It is awful here.
I think I shall buy myself the awesome snow boots I want. Waiting for a good sale or coupon.
DH was in northern VA (DC area) on business a couple of years ago and they got like 2 inches of snow the night he arrived. Not a single person he was meeting with the next day showed up before 10am "because of the snow". He was there at 7:30 and they couldn't believe he "braved" the snow. It was so funny.
This. I'm tired of people telling me how much I'll hate MA winters. Um, I lived through 5 winters in the Poconos, as well as record snowfall in MD.
Get a good coat and good boots. I love my Lands End boots.
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.

I live right outside of Worcester, and maybe it's because I grew up here, but I don't think our winters are terrible. I mean, they're certainly not good but they have their good and bad days, weeks, and months. The ice storm of 2009 was a pretty crazy time, but that isn't a regular occurrence. Living in MA is great because you get to experience a bit of every season. Thankfully winter isn't the permanent climate.
Last year was bad, but the winters before were pretty mild. It was the first year we had a lot of snow in a long time - I remember a couple of blizzards here and there in the early months of winter, but then we were done. The snow doesn't bother me as much as the cold, but it's amazing how resilient you become. By January/February 30 degrees feels tropical, heh.
And yes, definitely get a good pair of snow boots - Uggs will do you no good when there's patches of hard ice on the ground.
Is it too late to just move to Hawaii? I hate the cold and DH doesn't even seem to notice. I have a feeling the dog and I are going to freeze this winter.
At least I have an excuse to go shopping.
I hate the cold, love the snow....which doesn't really work together. But there is a reason why we are talking about moving to North Carolina next year. I couldn't live with the New England winters for much longer.
Same for us. We want to move back to Atlanta, or the Carolinas at some point in the relatively near future.
Are there days that are below freezing and blustery? Yes. But it isn't every day. In fact, typically, those days are few and far between. Usually it's cold (in the 30s) with occasional snow. We usually get a big snow storms a few times a year (sometimes more, sometimes less). But it isn't as if every day is a frozen tundra.
