BWLO: Rash?

He's got the worst rash he's ever had- an actual open sore. We've been changing him often, putting cream on it, and keeping his diaper off for an hour or so at night to let the skin air out.

I've also made sure they are doing this while he's at school.

He's had the open sore since last night... he doesn't want anyone to touch it to put cream on. Poor baby!

What else can we do?

I'm waiting on a call from the pedi.

Re: BWLO: Rash?

  • I usually use Boudreauxs Butt Paste or Aquaphor and then after I put that on put baby powder over it... usually works wonders over night.
  • This happened to Jack once - we put vasoline on the open sore to protect it, and then put Butt Paste over that. It cleared up pretty fast.

  • Sawyer had that happen once, and we did a combination of warm baths w/baking soda in them followed by the one hour naked time.  We used Desitin Maximum Strength because it has the most zinc oxide in it (40% vs. Boudreaux's 16% and the normal strength's 13%). I also put a layer of Aquaphor on first at bedtime.  It cleared up within two days.

Besides that, I just made sure to feed him bland foods for a few days during and following the rash.  He also had no juice or dairy (yogurt or cheese).

  • California Baby brand products makes a no-sting diaper rash wash with witch hazel and other natural ingredients, and that has helped us a LOT.

I also tried out the old wives remedy of egg whites... it sounds really odd, but you basically whip an egg white with a fork and apply it in a thin layer to the area and let it dry, let the baby be naked for as long as possible, then add maximum strength rash ointment over it before diapering.  It worked fairly well for us considering I had tried everything at that point.

  • We recently had this issue with Tessa and used A&D ointment with baby powder over top and it cleared up within a couple days.
  • Baking Soda Baths followed by no diaper time. Coconut Oil. Lotrimin if it looks yeasty. I have use the california baby diaper cream and it does work well too. When she was scratching it, I would add some hydrocortizone to it too (oked by nurse).
  • No kids here, but what about neosporin on the sore it's self, then whatever butt stuff on the surrounding booty?
