Delicious cake in MoCo?

We're having a 70th birthday party for my mom over Columbus Day weekend and I'm looking for a yummy cake to feed 16-20 ppl, preferably in the SS/Olney/Wheaton/Kensington area.  No clue what kind of cake I am looking for.

Any suggestions?

Re: Delicious cake in MoCo?

  • I've never gotten anything from here, but I've walked past the Itsy Bitsy Bakery in Kensington and it looks super cute and yummy.
  • Their cupcakes aren't great, but Cakelove has pretty good full-size cakes. They're in downtown SS. You could do Whole Foods, too.

  • Thanks ladies!

I didn't love Cakelove's cupcakes either so I had ruled them out.... perhaps I'll have to buy a little sample cake at each and do some taste testing this weekend!  Research, right?

  • I love Harris Teeter's cakes. And, they are relatively inexpensive.

  • I know some ppl aren't cakelove cupcakes fans, but I think their chocolate layer cake--Neil's Hat Trick--is heaven.  There's a CakeLove in SS I think & you can always get a slice to try...you know, as research!

  • I like Woodmoor bakery (it's in the shopping center in the Woodmoor neighborhood, just south of Trader Joe's on Colesville Rd.). I've bought a lot of things from them and they've all been yummy. They're reasonably priced and they do custom orders.

Also, if you haven't been there before, there's a tiny grocery store right next door to the bakery that has a surprisingly good wine and beer selection. It looks like a convenience store from the outside, but they have fresh produce and lots of alcohol. We buy a lot of beer there.

My other suggestion is Whole Foods. I've gotten several cakes and cupcakes from them and they've all been really good.

I don't like Cake Love's cakes very much, even the big cakes. Their flavors are good, but the cake is too dry. And it's way too expensive, considering how mediocre it is. But they sell cakes by the slice, so you could try a slice and see if you like it before committing.

I love that you know me so well.

I forgot about Woodmoor - I got red velvet cupcakes there and they were yummy.  I'll add them to my sugar coma research list and check out a nice prosecco to wash it down with next door!

OMG! This is my favorite too. BTW, kiahj, I think there's a 20% discount on chocolate everything at Cakelove on Wednesdays.

I need to check out that Woodmore place. I've been to the bakery once but it sounds like we need to look around a little more.
