I'm really interested to hear your thoughts on the sing off premier last night... favorites so far? Sara Bareilles as a judge?

I had to DVR it, but watched it today before class.

There seems to be a lot of talent this season. It will be a close competition if the next 8 groups are anythign like the first 8. Delilah is my favorite so far which is saying a lot since I seriously hate the song they did this week.

Sara Bareilles as a judge, to me, is a MAJOR improvement over Nicole pussycat doll. She has intelligent things to say because she's actually competed in a group like that before in addition to her own career success. I think that is going to lead to better feedback for the groups as a whole.

  • Disclaimer: I am extremely passionate and idealistic about music and what I like and what I consider good.  Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and if you disagree, that's fine and good and great.  No hard feelings either way!

Also, this will probably be a looooooong post as I feel lots of different things.

First:  Sara is a fantastic, amazing, wonderful, marvelous, incredible, stunning, awe-inspiring judge.  She actually knows what she is talking about, she's funny, and she works well with the other two.  You can almost tell that they feel more comfortable around her already.

I actually wasn't impressed with the first 8 groups as a whole.  There was only one group that I was blow away by, there were a couple that I really liked, and most of the rest I was meh about.  The reason I'm not happy with the show thus far is because the majority of the groups are very Glee-esque.  Now, I'm sure everyone knows that I'm not a Glee fan.  At. All.  Not my style.  Not my music style.  There are sooooooooooo many other song styles out there besides the belt-your-heart-out-chest-thumping-singing-to-the-stars that Glee portrays.  Which is why I loved last year so much.  There was an R&B style group (Committed), a down-home soul group (Street Corner), a ridiculously wonderful jazz group (Groove for Thought), an old school doo-wop group (Talk of the Town), etc. and so forth.  The Glee type groups did not stand out because they were all the same.  I will say, though, that it did seem like next week will have other styles of groups on it, so fingers crossed it ends up with a great cross section of styles.

Afro-Blue - My favorite and my pick to win out of the 8 that were on last night.  I adore the jazzy blues-y style (much in the vein of Groove for Thought last year) because it's incredibly technically difficult and the chords are so sweet.  Very Boyz II Men, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer.  Love it.

Vocal Point - The only other group that I really liked.  When I saw them on the preview, I wasn't super excited about them.  Thought they'd be just another Beelzebubs/On The Rocks/collegiate group.  But they did a great arrangement of Jump Jive, the lead singer was fantastic, and they were a lot of fun to watch.  Good quality and good entertainment.

Delilah - SOAPBOX and where I'm sure most of you will disagree heartily with me - I am 100% anti-Delilah.  Yes, they were good.  They sang well, stayed in pitch, blah blah blah.  What makes me so upset with them is the fact that I'm dead sure they were put together by the producers of the show.  You will never convince me that these girls from random groups across two seasons all got together for pillow fights and slumber parties and decided to re-try out for the Sing Off.  And magically make it.  Puh-leaze.  It seems so fake (to me).  Also, I hate the way that all girl groups have to be styled as sex pots and get up there and shake their asses to be good or pretty or hip.  They're the fvcking *** Cat Dolls incarnate, which makes me see red.  I like to have a feel of musical (not just singing, MUSICAL) talent behind groups that I like/support, and I just don't get that vibe from them.

^^^^ The above was purely my opinion and rant.  Sorry so long. ^^^

Really, though, I'm a huge fan of this show because it makes people think about other styles of music, the judges actually give criticism using musical terminology instead of 'Yo, dawg, lemme holler atcha, that was tiiiiiiiiight', which should basically be the goal of all true musicians.  And as much as I loved last year and still stalk Street Corner Symphony's twitter feed and am eagerly awaiting their upcoming album to be released in the next few weeks (!!!!!!), I figured it'd be pretty hard to top that with this next season.  Doesn't mean I'm not going to watch every episode thought!  It kills me that I have choir rehearsal on Monday nights and can't watch these and FB/nest/chat about these live.  KILLS ME.

So, that's what I've got.  What about you guys?

  • I agree with you that Delilah is probably created by the show's producers, but I really like girl groups... fake or not. They definitely have talent so if nothing else they will add something interesting to the show.

The college groups are right up my alley too. I don't know a ton about music and I like that sort of cheesy, preppy thing they've got going on. :)

The next 8 groups look really interesting. Personally, I'm excited to see the group of refugees who bonded over music.

  • Blanking on the name but I really liked the Urban ___ group that did the Eminem/Rhianna song.  I also liked ___ (holy short term memory loss, Liz you wrote it in your post) that did Jump Jive and I enjoyed Delilah (even if it's manufactured). :)  I liked Afro-Blue as well!

I could get down with the Urban group if they could do songs that had more singing in them.  Dude is good (and smokin' hot, btw), but this is a singing competition and rapping isn't singing, IMO.  Doesn't mean it's not good, though.  I mean, those girls that were in the back didn't really add anything at all to the song, and I didn't think the lead singer chick was all that fantastic.  I doubt that this group will be able to be very versatile, so they may not get far.
