The sublease saga continues, long

Long story short, you all know I've been trying to sublease our rental house. Found a great young couple about 2 weeks ago. He's military and they have 2 big labs so they wanted to just sublease the house through Dec (end of our lease) to get out of their tiny apartment and then they weren't sure if they would be moving to Tampa or not after that.

I emailed the owner to let her know they would like to apply and told her their situation, she set up a meeting to go over their application and meet them. On Sunday, we all met, everything went well, they signed a check for the application fee and planned to send us proof of income on Monday.

Last night, my landlord emailed me that everything looked fine and as long as the background checks turned up fine, they would be approved to sublease. Yay! Half my house is already packed up, we were counting on being out by this weekend so they could move in on the 1st.

This morning I have a message on my phone to call landlord, I call her and she states she does not feel comfortable having them here for 2.5 months only, something must be wrong with them. I effing lose it on her. If she had a problem with a short term tenant she should have told me that 2 months ago when we started this process and furthermore should not have let these poor people go through with the application process or strung me along until the last minute.

I was so mad when I got off the phone with her I was shaking and I just started crying at my desk. Then I went to lunch with my friend and had 2 mimosas :)

The silver lining is that she agreed to let us out of our lease 45 days early, so we are done at the end of Oct, although I'm totally skeptical of this until we get it in writing.

  • Wow. Your landlord sounds like a peach. Doesn't she realize that b/c the other couple is military they move around often? I would get your early termination agreement in writing and notarized or something to make it official ASAP. I'm so sorry this has been such a headache for you. I hope it's almost over.

  • She's a total c unit and she's just pissed we want to leave so she's making it difficult. I believe the only reason she even might let us terminate the lease early is because it will be easier to find renters in Oct/Nov then Dec right before Christmas. And you're right, I'm absolutely getting that shiite in writing.
  • I somehow missed it, but why are you guys trying to get out of this place?  (sorry)

We're trying to reduce expenses since my DH is unemployed. My grandparents own a home here that is waiting for us and we can rent it really cheap.
  • Ok.  Thanks for filling me in, I don't know where i've been.

I'm sorry your current landlord is being dumb.

  • That really, really sucks. She never should've agreed to a short-term sublease if she didn't feel comfortable with it.

Hopefully she'll actually let you out of your lease at the end of October.

  • I'm sorry. That really sucks. She is clearly stringing you along trying to make you stay. She should have just said no to subletting if that was how she felt. We went through something similar in SC. Our heat didn't work and all the repair men would fix it but say it would crap out again in a few days (which it did EVERY time) because she needed to replace it. Se refused to do so and we ended up with no heat almost all winter. DH got really sick, it was terrible. We tried to break the lease and couldn't because none of the repair requests were in writing. So, moral of story, get the agreement to break the lease in writing.

  • She emailed me last night with an offer in writing to terminate the lease early, so looks like it's a done deal.

So we are officially moving next weekend, I can't wait to get out of there!

  • Yay! Glad it's going to work out!

  • What a pain!  At least you are going to NYC for vacation soon and that will help get your mind off it :)
