new homeowner frustration

We purchased our home at the beginning of September and we are still living at DH's moms house. There were a few things that had to be repaired before we moved (new electircal box, painting, and kitchen floors) which we planned for in the beginning. But now whenever we get ready to move in something comes up. First the fridge stopped working, then the stove, then the toilet sprang a leak. I just want to actually live in our house! Just needed to vent a little and hear from others who have been through this that in the end it really is worth it. Thanks for listening!

Re: new homeowner frustration

  • I'm confused why you don't just move in?  If you had already been living there you wouldn't have moved out when those things happened.  It doesn't have to be perfect.

This exactly. We moved into our house on the settlement day.

  • I'm also confused why you don't just move in. We lived in our house 2 weeks after we bought it. It requires a complete Reno. We installed the flooring before we moved in, peeled wallpaper and fixed/painted the living room and dining room and gutted the kitchen (redid electrical). DH replumbed the house the week after we moved in and we were without kitchen appliances (except a fridge and microwave) for probably 6 weeks. With homeownership, something is going to break and something always comes up. The fridge/stove/toilet wouldn't be a big deal if you lived there.

I agree with most of this, with the exception of the fridge...I can see where it would be tough to live without a refrigerator for more than a week...

  • I understand waiting to move in until the painting and floors are complete- we had to be out of our apartment so the painting got done after we moved in.  I wish we could have done it before hand because it would have been a lot easier but its not like its impossible to do once you are there.
I don't understand why a leaking toilet or non functioning stove would keep you from moving in though.  Those things happen in homes.  Its annoying but it shouldn't keep you from living there.

  • Move already!  If you wait for everything, you will never move.  Things break.  Things need repair.  It's called being a homeowner!  I'm not trying to be snarky, just trying to be honest.  Your home will NEVER be perfect.  The sooner you accept it, the happier you will be.  I could name a laundry list of things in our house that need "fixing" or "tweaking."

FWIW, we moved in without a working stove.  Oven meals, microwave, BBQ and takeout served us well!

Do you have a home warranty?  If so, give them a call and they will come out within a week and fix it all if you aren't up to doing it yourself.

  • I know it will never be perfect. It's an old house and there is so much more to do then we even have planned. We were set to move in 2 weekends ago but then the fridge and half the lights in the house stopped working. Then we were ready again last weekend but when we showed up on Saturday there was an inch of water on the bathroom floor and the carpet in the attached bedroom (our room) was soaked. We had to shut off the water cause it was more like a gushing then a leak and we had to clear out the bedroom and dry everything. The toilet is being fixed tonight so hopefully this weekend it will happen!

  • am i the only one who finds it strange that all of that happened in the first couple weeks after settling? sure, maybe within the first few months... but that's a LOT of bad luck in just 2 weeks...
