I finally started going to the gym. Tips?

This is my 3rd week of working out every other day at the gym, and I am going strong! I really think this is going to be the time that I stick with it. It helps that both my H and I have been going together and he has been acting as my trainer. He's been kind of planning what equipment I should use and how long, and while I'm on, say, the elliptical, he'll go lift weights or run on the treadmill. We're both really glad we're sticking with it.

Does anyone else go to the gym regularly? My goal is to tone up through out my lower half and also to tone my upper arms. I'm wondering what specific equipment, routine, etc worked for you, or what do you recommend?

Re: I finally started going to the gym. Tips?

  • Hey Lauren :)  I lost 10 lbs last year (and unfortunately gained back half of it since slacking off this summer.. but I just joined a new gym adn plan on getting back to it).

I did this by attending the cardio weightlifting classes.  According to the trainers at my gym, the cardio weightlifting classes are really good because you are getting in your cardio with the fast paced movements but you are also toning up.  I leave those classes feeling exhausted by great.  On the days that they don't have those classes, I will usually just do the elliptical machine for 20 minutes and then do some ab stuff and legs, depending on what I feel like doing.  I will also sometimes take a yoga or pilates for relaxation and flexibility.

Good luck!  I just joined Shapes with a bunch of coworkers and we are all pushing each other to go, which is great motivation, so I'm hoping to lose about 10 lbs before the Holidays.. I want to be that pre-wedding weight again :)

  • Thanks for the tips, Shawna! I'm going to look and see if they have cardio weightlifting classes at my gym. They have a bunch of different classes so I think they must have one. How often were you attending class and working out on your own when you lost the 10 lbs? Were you dieting too?
  • Ditto, Shawna.  I go 3x/week. One of those days I do the cardio strengthening class. Basically, you do a circuit of high-intensity cardio for 1-2 minutes, then followed by weights targeting a specific muscle group. On the other 2 days, I just work out on my own. I do the ellptical for 20-25 minutes, then lower or upper body exercises and abs. Right now, I'm focusing on toning my triceps and thighs and bulking up my shoulders.

  • DH and I are starting our second attempt at P90X since we moved before we could finish last time.  Having DH as a workout partner has really helped me too because it keeps me motivated.

I don't have any sage wisdom since I only workout in my living room these days, but good luck with your new workout program.  I am happy to hear that you are enjoying it and getting the results you want!

  • Thanks girls, I'm happy that you say you do the elliptical for about 25 minutes because that's how long I do it too :)

Aly- unfortunately it's the gym at our neighborhood's club so you have to be a member :( You could come as a guest some time if you wanted!

Kendra- GL with P90X! I have been meaning to email you to update you- I got that job! We had like a month of interviews and they finally offered the spots to a few of us last week. I start training for it by the beginning of Oct.

  • I like the classes at the gym that PP's have mentioned.  Kickboxing, body sculpt, pilates, etc. And the best part about those classes is you can learn a lot of exercises that you can build on and do on your own as well.  If you don't have those classes available I'm also a Jillian fan.  I like to still go to the gym and get cardio for sure because her videos dont have enough cardio in them on their own.  But she has some dynamic moves for strength and toning that use both upper and lower body, and learning them in your living room is a good start to take to the weight room later.  She does what the instructors at the gyms classes do.   She incorporates several body parts into one move, for example squats combined with bicep curls, lunges with tricep curls.   That way you are also keeping your heart rate increased while building muscle.  And I always shoot for the heaviest weight I can handle while keeping proper form.  Some exercises (like in pilates) I stick to 3 lbs, some I like 10.  Of course, I haven't been to the gym since becoming PG in May, sigh.  But my gym has a day care and I'll be back after the New Year dammit :)
