Groupon gifts?

OK, poll time.  Money is tight but I like giving good gifts.  I'm considering a wine Groupon as a Christmas gift for each of my sisters this year.  Is that tacky?  I know that they'd enjoy spending the money on some good new vino options, but I guess I'm just not sure about the whole gifting a coupon thing.

Thoughts?

Re: Groupon gifts?

  • We were given a Groupon for Canvas on Demand and I loved it. Granted, I asked for it, and even though I buy them for myself it was nice to get one for free as well. I guess if it's something your sisters would enjoy or have expressed interest in, I don't see anything wrong with it. Is it a deal where they would need to shell out some of their own money to use it?

Is it the sort of thing people in your family find tacky? I know that nobody in my family would find it tacky, but some other families may.

  • They wouldn't have to spend any of their own money unless they went above and beyond the $75 value.  Both of my sisters are on super super shoestring budgets (one is a new doctor paying off med school and the other is making things work on my BIL's income alone with a kiddo at home and is a total coupon queen) so wine is a splurge thing.  I think they'd enjoy it - it just feels odd with the whole coupon aspect of it.
  • That would be totally acceptable in my family, but we're thrifty love-to-save-a-buck kind of people. In some families, giving a Groupon might be considered tacky, but not in my family. I would appreciate that as a gift!

  • Between my MIL and SIL, we almost compete to see who can pay the cheapest for something.  It's always, "look at XYZ, it's it great!  And I only paid X amount for it!"  I almost always try and look it up for cheaper, buy my MIL is amazing at store discounts.

So, I wouldn't consider it tacky.  You save money, they get more...what's to complain about?

  • Ditto PP!

In my family, it wouldn't be an issue either.  H & I actually got my dad a Livingsocial deal for Father's day, to a local nursery that he loves.  He was so excited & went & spent it that weekend.

And I agree with Sue/Mike, she said it great! - You save money, they get more...what's to complain about?

    Go for it!  = )

  • Do you know what kind of wine they like?  Could you take the Groupon and go to whatever store/online shop it is for and actually pick out the $75 worth of wine and give them the bottles of wine?  If you're feeling uncomfortable with giving a coupon, maybe this could be a way around it?
  • Well - I went ahead with it.  I like the idea of using the coupon in their honor but on the other hand, I want them to be able to branch out and try something new and different if they want to.  So - they'll get it with a card under the tree this year!

Thanks for your feedback all!  I don't feel so strange about it now that I know other people would think it was an OK gift.  Big Smile

  • I think it's a great idea!  If you still feel weird about it ahead of Christmas, maybe you could give them a heads up that you're giving a groupon. It might help them/other family members feel less pressure to spend over their budgets since you mentioned they are on budgets too. It would be a double present: great wine and less pressure during the streeful holidays. Way to think outside the box.
