Help me with paint colors (long)

This is kind of long....But I'm trying to figure out paint for my living room and kitchen - the kitchen is right next to it so thought it would be easy to paint both the same color if it works.

My kitchen had old ugly wood cabinets and all the walls in the house were a cream color. I painted the cabinets and trim white. I originally was going to do this olive green in the kitchen and this tan in the living room:

Well DH hated the green and our kitchen is really long since we don't have a dining room so I did 1 wall with the tan to see how that would look. It is super dark. The green looks good around the cabinets so we thought about doing like the actual kitchen green and the rest tan but these colors dont coordinate that good. So we are starting over.

This is our living room furniture (well similar): We have a couch, love seat & recliner, the coffee tables, tv stands and frames are all dark brown wood. And our curtains are really light light brown.

So I am trying to figure out a color. Our carpet is light cream and we plan for trim to be white or light cream.

I am thinking either a gray that has a ting of brown or a really light tan - lighter than the one above since that was too dark. The problem too is the windows in the living room face the east so in the evening it doesn't get hardly any light so the room is dark unless we have our lamps turned up all the way. I'm wanting more neutral colors rather than something bold like red or blue. Any suggestions would be great.  I've tried searching online but most pics don't tell you colors so that is no help.

Re: Help me with paint colors (long)

  • We just painted our upstairs a green color and I really like it!  Originally it was a tan color (Avenue Tan - Sherwin Williams), similar to the one you posted, but once we were finished painting it looked more green then tan, and just not a green I liked, so we finally got around to redoing it..two years later.  :)

Also repainted our bedroom grey at the same time.

If you go here and type in the color name, you can see the colors we did:

Upstairs (living, dining, halls, and entry) - La Fonda Cactus. Would be a good kitchen color.

Bedroom - Beached Shadow.  Ended up liking this a lot more once we got a second coat on and the blinds up in the Bedroom. Was a bit worried it looked a smidge 'purple' in the light of day with no blinds and one coat.  Love it now!

Almost went with a Color called Artichoke in the upstairs that might be exactly what you are looking for for either room.  I actually had an entire wall in my living room painted Artichoke before I decided it was too grey. ... but it's a little more on the tan side of grey, if that makes sense?  A bit darker, so might be good contrast with the white in the kitchen.

I have samples of all of these and I can't even tell you how many others from Lowes.

Some other greys we were considering:  Man Cave, Chimney Sweep.  Both DARK greys.

  • Thanx. I love artichoke. Will have to grab the sample card and see - may end up doing a shade or 2 lighter but it is at least a good starting point.
