Just saw the car seat question below and remembered question #45 on my pre-move list. Does anyone know where I can find info on car seat regulations/specifics for France or Western Europe?
We have a Britax Marathon for DD, but I'm afraid it might not fit in smaller European cars or might not be approved for use outside the US. I am open to buying a seat when we get to France since DD will be ready for a booster shortly after we move anyway.
In case it matters, we won't actually own a car while living in France, so it's just for occasional use. We'll be traveling to Spain a lot as well (to visit my family).
Re: S/O Car seats
I just brought a Graco Nautilus 3 in 1 from Canada to France and it fits fine in our 3 door VW Golf. The regulations in France are pretty much the same as in North America for toddlers.
We were able to fit two toddler car seats into the back seat of a friend's mini a few weeks ago,.
I seem to remember you speak French, here is a link: http://www.auto-evasion.com/publication/article-120.html
We're considering a Graco Nautilus, so that's good to know. And thanks for the link!
This. We never took a seat from one country to another (US to UK) becuase the safety standards were different and they weren't technically approved for use in other countries. We used a CabrioFix with the EasyFix base in the UK and had a Graco SnugRide that we used in the US when we visited. I hated that Graco in comparison to our CabrioFix. It just felt so flimsy. There are only two things I prefer about US carseats - 5 pt harness on infant seats (is the Cabrio still 3 pt? this always bothered me but that was almost 4 years ago so I have no idea if its still the same) and the fact that in the UK they turned around to FF as soon as they were out of the bucket seats. Bruce was FF at 9 months. I hated it.
I don't want to contradict what's already been said, but we have a European car seat(Maxi Cosi), but as it was bought in the US it conforms to US standards and wasn't legal in the UK. I also don't think it would have fit either.
In any event, I'd check on safety standards and what's street legal in France before going with what "seems like it would fit."
Good luck!
