Neighborhood recommendations

I don't post often, but could use some input. Please recommend your neighborhood.... I've heard of Naples Manor and Stonegate in Silver Spring. Thoughts on those places? Any other similar places in Silver Spring.

Considering a move... would need a single family 4-5 beds, small yard, good public schools.

Re: Neighborhood recommendations

  • If you feel comfortable posting your budget that would be helpful.  4 to 5 beds is a big house is this area.

I'm no help for MD neighborhoods.  GL!

  • Sure. Our HHI is $200K; and we have $175K in savings. We have a good handle on our finances, but want to leave financial breathing room for a 3rd child.

We do not want to use our entire savings for a down payment... so we're aiming to spend $500K to $550K maximum.

We like the Silver Spring area, so that's our first preference.

  • Silver Spring is huge. Is there something specific you like about the neighborhoods you listed? I think they're in the far northeastern section of Silver Spring, about 15-20 minutes from "downtown" silver spring. If you want to live in that area, I'd recommend looking at the Burnt Mills neighborhood. Burnt Mills Hills is really nice, but I think homes are more expensive there.

  • I'm in the Colesville section of Silver Spring, we moved here about 2 years ago.  I'm not familiar with the neighborhoods that you listed, but we did look at a couple of 'hoods in your range over in the Calverton section and the Cross Creek Club subdivision specifically - we really liked the area, easy access to 29 and from what I understand they have good schools and are part of the Northeast Consortium (or whatever it is called, I have no kids) for high school.

Not sure where you or your husband currently commute to, but DH was really stuck on Silver Spring when we moved here.  I wanted to look a little farther north in Olney, but his geographical stopping point was where we are, so this is where we settled.  With that said, we do almost all of our shopping in Olney, eat out their often, basically spend a lot of time there.  We've since both agreed that we wished that we (read: he) opened our options a bit more and looked at houses there.  It just seems that you get a little more for your $$ - more land, a younger/larger house, and from what I have heard from friends, it is super family oriented, as well as a much smaller town feel.

Good luck with your search!  There are a still a lot of great deals out there!

  • We love Stonegate. We're actively looking there. It has a great community feel (pool and elementary school in the neighborhood) and is relatively close to Metro. We like most of 20905 and 20906. You can get a very nice SFH for $400-500k.

Olney is also great (though commute to DC less so) and houses are priced just a bit higher.

I think part (if not all) of Cross Creek is actually PG County, so they wouldn't be part of the consortium.

I haven't checked out Stonegate, yet, but someone recommended the neighborhood as being family friendly. Have you been to any open houses there? Are they well-constructed homes?  We have not considered Olney, but still have tons of research to do before we make a move.  We don't mind being in a suburban area. Which metro is it near? Glenmont?

  • Olney can be a 15-20 minute drive from Glenmont. I'd also recommend the Shady Grove area - Rockville/Gaithersburg/Derwood - that's closer to the other side of the Red Line and you can definitely get a 4-5 SFH for under $500K.

  • We're in the Longmead area of SS.  It's a nice community with lots of playgrounds and pools.  My kids will go to Stonegate Elementary.
