Paying bills in the US...sucks.

So we are still waiting for the work visa to process (was supposed to be done by the first of September), so we have a US bank account.  So we get charged foreign transaction fees for everything (thankfully we have USAA, so they are minimal, but still).

And once we do have an account here, then we will have to do wire transfers to the US to pay US bills.  We cannot win, can we??

Thanks for letting me_bitch a little.

Re: Paying bills in the US...sucks.

  • Would your company be willing to deposit part of your paycheck in your USAA account?  My NL job did.  They took the transfer fee out of my paycheck but at least we didn't have to physically do it once a month!
  • Can you deposit US checks in your country?

My US clients pay me on my US bank account, so I used to have the same problem until I found out that my bank here allows me to deposit US checks (all I had to do was fill out a form with them once to activate this "service"). So now I just write myself checks from my US account and deposit it here. It takes a bit longer to get my money into my bank account here, but at least I don't pay any sort of transfer fees. It could be worth looking into.

  • Right now they are being deposited into our US account, but in order to pay anything here, we have to withdrawal money from the ATM.  And there is where the foreign transaction fees come in. And if we get money deposited to our bank here, we still have US bills, so we will have to wire money to the US bank---a catch 22~

I'm not sure what you Gibby---can you elaborate?

  • My company split my check. 70 Percent to NL account and 30 to usaa. You can deposit checks from home with usaa if you have a PDF of the check (is you can scan the check and save on your computer).
  • Hmmmm......I have USAA and they don't charge me a foreign transaction fee for purchases/ATM use on my debit card.   They do charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases I make with the credit card I have through them, but it's only 1%.

Are you still military?  I'm active duty, and use the Community Bank (subsidiary of Bank or America) on US bases in the UK....If you think you might qualify for this, then I'll PM you some details.

  • Ditto the split deposits. We have enough to live on deposited monthly into our Malaysian account. The rest of H's paycheck is deposited into our US account.
  • Definantly look into splitting your check if you can.  We also do the writing a US check to a local bank where we keep a small account for living expenses and it makes life a little easier.  One tip though, obviously some banks are more international than others, so do a little research so you don't end up with the same problem we have.  Only one guy knows how to do the paperwork and conversions at our bank so we can only go when he is there.  Other people who choose bigger, more regional banks, have better luck.  That said, all we had to do was bring copies of our visas in, and a note from H's company verifying he's working for them and we were set.

  • And if not, a one-time transfer service (we use PayPal) is far easier than messing about with little fees all month.

Same for me my USAA credit gets charged a low fee. My debit has none and it for some reason I get charged an ATM fee it's reimbursed.

  • Exactly. By continuing to get your money deposited into your US account, you can write yourself a check to deposit in your account abroad for just the amount you ll need every month, and leave some to pay your US bills as well, all without transaction fees (depending on your US and foreign banks and their policies of course).

Let me know if this is more clear, or you can PM me if you'd like.

Thankfully, we don't get ATM charges, but we do get wire transfer charges, which is how we have to pay our rent.  The rent is paid in dollars, but our other bills here are paid in soles.  I am not active military (my father was military), so we don't live on a base or near a base. I am assuming I cannot deposit foreign currency into our USAA account, but I actually never thought to ask.

The company cannot split the check due to foreign income tax (something or another) here in Lima.   But I will ask again to see what they say.

I would just give USAA a call and see if they have any advice to offer. I don't think I've ever hung up the phone with them and said wow this bank sucks.

That is certainly true...they are pretty awesome. I love that I can call them collect too.

USAA is a bank that is available to active military, retired miltary, and their families. They don't have any branches so everything is done via the phone or internet.
