The time for us to start looking into car seats is slowly approaching. But car seats are a little overwhelming to me.
DH's friend highly recommended to us the Britax Romer Sleeper, in which the baby lies down. It seems good, but it is installed sideways in the back seat, so it takes up the entire back seat.
And a second question? Do you travel home with a car seat, or what are your automobile solutions for when you travel home?
Thanks so much!

Re: Moms- car seat?
The Britax Rome Sleeper is good but it only lasts until 6 months (and thats if you're lucky). We went straight into the Maxi Cosi carbio which we like a lot. Most of my friends have the Pearl and like it too. They both have good safety scores, look nice and work with a lot of the strollers out there. They should fit your LO until they are a year old or so.
Most of the car seats that I've seen past the infant start at 9 months so if you got the sleeper you'd have to then get a 0+ car seat which you will only use for 6ish months.
We are going to the states in March with LO and will take our car seat, it installs with the seatbelt as well as ISOFIX. (Oh we have the base and I recommend it, yes it does cost a bit but it's so easy to use). As we are visiting we don't need our seat to be up to US standards (it's missing the chest snap thing which isn't allowed here as it's viewed as unsafe). We are doing this because we always rent a car to see friends and family and stay at different houses. If we were picked up every time and dropped of by the same person I'd get a convertible seat to leave there (order on line for delivery to the family members house). That way we wouldn't have to lug seats around with us and it'll last a while.
For our first car seat, we got the combo car seat/stroller, I didn't really like mine though, but think if I would have gotten a better quality one I would have liked it.
As for a car seat at home, I bought both of the grandparents a car seat before I left so each household we'd be around would have one. I just bought cheap ones, one from a used baby store and one from Target. Ironically, DS loves the one I got at Target for like 40 bucks..super comfy.
We` also started with the maxi cosi cabrio fix. I loved it. It lasted until about a year.
Then we got a Graco something that is actually a 0,1,2 seat. If ever we have another kid, I think I will just get a 0, 1, 2 from the start.
For some reason, I'm not very comfortable with the bassinet type car "seats".
We got a Maxi Cosi Cabriofix which worked with our Quinny Buzz 3 stroller. It worked well for the first year. We ended up going to a Maxi Cosi Axiss car seat and love it. It's heavy, but it's pretty easy to install and has high safety ratings. Love that the seat swivels. Makes it easier to get a squirmy toddler out of the car.
We'll be using these seats with the next kid as well. When we travel, we just use my niece's car seat that's at my parents house. We haven't traveled anywhere as a family than back to MI.
For the infant phase we had a seat/stroller/car base combo from BabyTrend. Loved that car seat. It was light.
For after that we have the Britax Boulevard and also got a second-hand Graco seat of some kind. That way DH and I both have a seat in our cars so we can take BabyD as needed.
When we visited the States last year I bought a $40 seat (cosco, I think) and it was great. Worked so well and I'll absolutely use it again with this next baby.
