Carrying Cash

Something Morrigan said in the "Cheap Friend" post got me thinking.  DH and I almost never carry cash, we use our debit card for everything.  As you know, we are currently living with my parents.....my Dad freaks that we don't carry cash "because you never know what might happen."  We have a stash of cash in the house, we just don't carry with use.  I'm wondering if this is a generation thing or what.  Sooooo............

Re: Carrying Cash

  • The first option should be $0.  Don't know why its not coming up.
  • I think it is a generational thing.  My mother and MIL are always making comments about how DH and I never have any cash and always use our debit cards for whatever.  My mom has always been big my whole life about how you should always have at least $20 bucks on you, and also some emergency cash in your car, ect. Because you never know what might happen and when you might need cash.
  • I usually carry at least $20 in my wallet b/c I've gotten burned before when trying to purchase something and the credit/debit card machine was broken and/or they'll only accept cash. I use my debit card for everything when I can!

  • I have to think about. I've gotten in the habit of getting an exta $20  cash back from the gorcery store or gas station on Sunday's to get me through the week. I like to keep cash on me in case of an emergency. I also keep $20 hidden throughout my car for the same reason.

H always carries cash- so I can usually bum some from him.

  • I have $6 randomly thrown about inside my purse at all times it seems. This money usually comes from when I've paid for someones lunch with my debit card and they pay me back in cash.

  • Depends on when I went to the bank, lol.  Generally I am more apt to use my card.  DH always has like $100-200 in his wallet.  He's a cash person.
  • I am lucky to have $5 on me and that is RARE!
  • I used to carry cash back in the day when written checks were predominantly used, like in the 90's.  Then debit/check/credit cards became more popular and I stopped needing cash since it was easier to use a card.  Usually if a store says I can't use my card for less than $5 purchases, than I don't buy anything.  I actually heard on some news show that it's illegal for stores to require a minimum amount to use a credit card.

  • I always carry cash on me since that's how I get paid with my tips. I only deposit enough in my account to pay the bills and if I have left over to save. I pay for all of my gas, groceries, etc. with cash though. It helps not to overspend at the grocery store and Wal-Mart. My mom and Dad always taught me to carry cash with me just in case though, and it has come in handy sometimes.
  • I rarely/never carry cash unless I'm planning to go garage saling.

I feel like an idiot at the grocery store if I have to pay with cash. Because I feel like I can't count it out properly. I am just so used to having my debit card that cash seems foreign to me. It's terrible, I know.

  • I use credit for everything. We basically use it like a debit card (always pay the full bill at the end of the month, have never carried a balance) so why not earn some airline miles while I'm buying stuff I would buy anyway?
  • My mother taught me that only strippers carry cash.

Not really, but I still never have it with me. I'm more likely to spend it and I don't know why. I think I have a mental block that it's already checked out of my account so it's free money to spend. We both have a problem with thinking like this so we don't carry it.

Hmm...I wonder if that's why I get dirty looks when paying for my groceries with my tip money?  ;-)

I've always wanted to pull out like wads of ones to pay for something. If I'm going to be a stripper, I'm going to be a good one.

I guess if I was really good I would have more than ones.

Of course. You have to be a good stripper and make more then just the dollar bills, throw in some 5's and if you're lucky some 10's too. I strive to be like Tina Fey in Date Night when they go undercover.

  • I usually have a dollar or two. I rarely have anything more than 5 or 10 dollars. The only time I carry cash is when we go on vacation and want to be sure we don't overspend.

  • I also think that having direct deposit impacts how much our generation carries cash. I don't go to tw bank to deposit a check. It seems silly to go there just to get cash when my debit card is accepted almost everywhere.

Same here. My grandparents always say we should have cash on hand, but if I have cash I'm more likely to spend it since it's already been deducted from my checkbook...whereas with debit, I'll see the balance in our account going down "differently" and won't spend as easily.
