With the impending arrival of Baby #2, I have been chatting with our (in home) babysitter about what she will charge us for 2 kids. I am curious what others pay for daycare...
1 - How much does your daycare charge for 1 child?
2 - How much does your daycare charge for 2 or more kids?
Re: Daycare Costs
When I was researching our area I found that in home care would range from $150 - $350, where most averaged $225.
No idea on 2+ kids.
I am sure you pay less up in the OC, but down here I pay:
1. One kid, FT, is $26,000 year for her age (slightly more for babies and slightly less for pre-schoolers). It works out to $2,166.00/mo. It's billed like a school which is why it's yearly.
2. Second kid would be a 10% discount (whoop-di-freaking-do). If/when we have #2, we'll probably hire a nanny since it would end up being less than paying for two kids in daycare.
125/126 a week.
$126 when he was at The Goddard School and I had a Educator's discount. Normal rate was $150ish. Rates don't include meals I had to pack his lunch or buy hot lunch at $3.00/a day. I wish we could have kept him there, but it was just to damn far from our house.
At the current place, a local center,we pay $125 a week which includes breakfast and lunch.
Additional children are an extra $50-75
ETA: I realized that my prices are for preschool/pre-k.
I think we paid $145 a week for toddler daycare back in Baton Rouge but its hard to compare because the system is Louisiana is waaaayyy different from here. We were like outlaws for not putting him in a home daycare which would have been cheaper.
If Alex were to go full time the weekly tuition is
Infant Room (6 wks - 18 mos)..........$250.00
Toddler Room (18 mos - 36 mos)...... 220.00
Nursery School....................................190.00
PreSchool.............................................190.00
Kindergarten........................................190.00
with 5% reduction for siblings.
Holy mother of god. I knew mine was bad but what Trickey and Sunshine - what?!
Mine is obscene. I know. However, most people here (AKA every single person I know) is either a SAHM or has a nanny. A nanny for us, FT, would be more like $50,000/year (given how many hours we need per day). So. yea.
Megan, you can pay me to be a nanny for you.
Holy hell, there would be no point in me working if I was spending that kind of money - of course I get that he NY $ is different than the OH $ but still ....
Daycare providers in your area must make pretty good money?
We had a babysitter coming to our house over the summer and we were paying her $500/month (keep in mind this is for half time). She is starting college this week, so next week Jax is starting at an actual daycare center and we will be paying $450/month for the same amount of time. The other center we looked at was around $700/month but that included food and it was a Kindercare (which is a national chain I think).
Wow Naylon, WOW.
We pay $200 a week just for Jack. I also usually bring a gallon of milk, yogurt and one other thing for the 3 kids to share every week. I don't have to do this, but I like to. My kid eats a LOT, and our babysitter buys all the food for the kids.
She is charging us an additional $75 a week for Carter. She originally said $50, and I gave her the raised eyebrow (cause to me that seemed like nothing), so she said we could pay her anywhere between $50 and $75, but nothing higher than $75.
So, we will be paying $275 a week for 2 kids. Which I think is excellent, especially given the quality of care she gives. It is interesting (but not surprising) to see how the rates are lower for you ladies who are further south from me. In general, it's a lower COL down there as it is. NY is so damn expensive.
Trickey - you're hired!
I guess it's all supply and demand. They can charge it b/c people will pay it.
It's also not a huge center (which, PS, the few big centers there are were only marginally less) and it's not an in-home. It's a small center, in a house. Kind of in the middle, I guess.
The craziest thing is that *most* people in my town live in a house at least twice what mine cost and I know lots of people who have 3+ kids. They are all SAHMs. Which, still, they are SAHMs, so they are doing all that on one salary!!!
Nannies make minimum $15/hr. and I'd need 11 hrs/day.
I am not even mentioning this thread to DH. He'd DIE if he knew that's what you pay an hour or so away from me. DIE.
190 a week. We provide food. It goes down to 180 once she is potty trained
I don't know about discounts for a second, but doubt it.

He would want to move up here, which would be awesome, b/c then we'd be even closer! hahaha
Katie, you laugh. If he found a job there he'd be there tomorrow. He'd never commute to NYC from there.
Being closer to you would be awesome! Being closer to MIL.........eeeeks, not so much.
That's right, I forgot your MIL lives in CV. Yeah that might not be wonderful for you.
Hey, they just opened that brand new hospital 10 mins down the road from my house, they must have some job openings there! haha
We pay $175/week for in-home (not ours, the DCP's), full-time.
I once asked her, hypothetically, what she charges for two kids, and if there is a discount for the second one. She said that yes, she usually offers a bit of a break on the second kid, but she also said it totally depends on the situation--how close in age they are, how many other kids she has at the time, etc. She said that a lot of times, parents with preschool age kids will start sending their kids to part-time preschool programs, too, so that changes things as well. Sooo... all of this to say that I really don't know. But DH and I are going into plans for a second child believing that we'll be doubling daycare costs.

I was curious to see your answer Heather, since you live in the same state as me, but not down in pricey Westchester. So we are about comparable, with you being a bit cheaper - which I expected b/c it seems that housing and other things in Rochester are a little less expensive than down here.

On the flip side, I was surprised to see that yours was so similar to mine! FWIW, my SIL lives in Binghamton (I know it's not the same area as you, but still) and gets a great deal on two kids for an in-home set-up--the discount for her second child is steep, the same type of deal you're getting!

Naylon, OMG!!!! I wonder if the DC area is comparable to what you pay in NYC. Anyone? Hoping not, otherwise we will never be able to afford kids
.
1. If Neena were full-time we would be paying $125 at our current in-home provider
2. I believe it's $75 for each additional child.

I love this and totally agree!!!
Liam is in an in-home provider (not our home) and we pay $200/week. We also bring diapers, wipes, milk, Liam's breakfast, snacks and lunch, and fresh fruit for all kids to share each week. This is an amazing deal for the area. We had looked into the pre-schools, and it was upwards of $400+/week.
Since we are not quite ready to start TTC, I haven't asked about if there is a discount for another baby. I sure hope so:)
Yep, it's crazy! Daycare costs ($1500ish for an infant here) are the primary reason why we're still actively avoiding.
