Accounting for periods of unemployment Q

Hi, I am applying for a position and on the app it says to account for all periods (3 months or more) of unemployment. I've never had an app request that so I am unsure of what they want me to put. The last time I worked was April. I was a substitute teacher, and that was the last time I was needed. I didn't work the summer because no schools here even have summer school. And since I wasn't able to find a permanent position I am now looking for a non-teaching job (sub jobs are inconsistent because there are way more subs that jobs). During the summer I was finishing up my MA, so it's not like I was sleeping in and watching Teen Mom all day or anything. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to put? I apologize for the formatting, I'm on my iPad.

Re: Accounting for periods of unemployment Q

  • Why don't you say exactly that?  Frankly, I wish that more apps had asked that question.  It seemed like, without the opportunity to explain myself, companies just trashed my resume because I hadn't had a job in over a year.  I had a good reason for it, but they wouldn't have known.

Just say what you said here, and that you're looking for something more permanent, and that while you were disappointed to not find a full time teaching position, you are up for a new challenge.

  • Some of the applications I've completed have asked "Reason for unemployment" - you could probably put "Completion of graduate work" if the periods match up.  So in this case, if you were unemployed from April through now because you were wrapping up all the requirements for you to receive your MA I would think that's acceptable.

FWIW, the last period of unemployment I had, I was relocating from Seattle to NYC and took two months for that (DH moved first, so I was on my own for packing, establishing movers, selling stuff, etc), so I put "Preparing for relocation from Seattle to NYC" and I wasn't even asked about that during the interview.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

I agree.  You have nothing to be ashamed of.  I don't think the question is being asked so that they can criticize your answer - they just truly want an explanation.  You have a good one.
