Anyone know about removing mildew from antiques?

We bought this gorgeous antique cabinet at an auction, and the mildew is much worse than I initially thought.  It's mostly on the inside, so I'm more concerned about the smell than the appearance.  I tried a bleach and water solution, which didn't help.

Outside of having it professionally restored, any suggestions?  I unfortunately don't have an outside area to work in, so whatever I do has to be done indoors, if at all possible.

Re: Anyone know about removing mildew from antiques?

  • Murphys oil soap and then vinegar. Try sitting it out in the sun too.

  • are you going to repaint it?  some sanding and kilz will knock it out.

if not, it may just take time and repeated washing with some sort of anti-mildew solution.   i have heard that bleach + dish soap is good.

  • I unfortunately have no place to put it outside.

I guess I'll just wash with bleach and dish soap (and water, I'm assuming?) repeatedly and see if I make any progress, and if not, try Murphy's if I can find it.  Definitely not repainting--it's really gorgeous.

    Thanks ladies!
