When to transplant fall blooming perennials?

I have a few fall blooming perennials that I would like to move to another location. I'm trying to figure out when I should do this. I think I'm supposed to do it when they are dormant, but don't know when this would be. After they are done blooming later this fall? In the early spring?

What about summer blooming perennials that are done blooming?

Sorry for the novice questions, I'm very new to all of this.

Re: When to transplant fall blooming perennials?

  • I usually do all perennials (no matter when they bloom) in the springtime.

  • You can move perennials up until the ground freezes.  For fall bloomers, wait until they are done blooming so you don't miss your blooms.  OR chop off all the blooms and take them inside :)  If you don't get to it,  you can do it early spring.

This--especially if the perennials are temperamental and you live in an area with rough winters.
