I think we have a cast iron tub. I made the mistake of using Comet with Bleach on it one day, and it turned a nasty rust color on the spots where the Comet hit it. Apparently this happens (learned via Google) if the enamel is wearing off, the bleach interacts with the cast iron. Using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, the stain came off.
HOWEVER... if enamel is wearing off, does this mean my tub is leaching lead????
How much is it to get a tub "reglazed" or whatever it's called, or should I have it tested first? I have no idea how old the tub is, but it doesnt' look THAT old.
Advice?

Re: cast iron tubs?
I have no idea about the lead issue.
We got our tub reglazed a few months ago with American Tub and Tile using an Angie's list "big deal". I think it was $279 for just the tub, but the only option is white I think. They did a pretty good job but there was one spot on the tub that created a drip mark - they came out within a few days to sand it down and it looks great. IMO, if you look closely at the edges and some other really nit-picky spots, you can tell it's been reglazed, but I like it MUCH better than the ugly gold it was. If you contact them and say you saw the big deal a month or so ago I bet they'll honor it.
Stand up for something you believe in.
It's not rusted, and the stains are gone thanks to the magic of hydrogen peroxide.
So I'm mainly concerned with the lead, and if it means we need to reglaze. Appearance wise, it looks fine, no chips or anything... so if it's fine, I definitely will save my money... but just curious if it's something I can have checked out?

Are you talking about any lead in the glaze or in the tub? I briefly researched cast iron tubs when we were replacing ours & I didn't see anything about lead. I mean, if it's made out of the same stuff as my skillet, it's iron...not lead.
eta: we went with cast iron. our previous tub had been refinished or something by the previous owners & it started peeling off after a few years.
Talking about lead leaching from the porcelain glaze... I googled and apparently lead is a common ingredient in the glaze used on cast iron tubs, and a common source of elevated levels in kids
