We have brass doorknobs in our house that I don't think have been cleaned once in the 104 years they have been there. We are redoing a room (painting doors) and we took the knobs off. I was able to get the closet door knob shiny (it was black to start) again, but the knob on the door to the room will not come clean. I have gotten a few very small shiny spots, but most of the grime seems untouchable. Any tricks you want to share? Is there anything I can safely soak them in that might soften the grime?
Re: Cleaning Brass
Brasso seems to work really well.
My mom has an antique flour mill that has a brass counter on the front of it. The piece of furniture is about the size of a hutch (and it's used as one) so the counter gets some abuse and it polishes up really well with the Brasso.
She's been known to use tomatoes on really stubborn spots. Nothing removes tarnish quite like tomato acid. She'd just cut a tomato and rub the slices on the bad spots. She does the same thing on the bottom side of brass pots too.
I just realized that my mom has a ton of brass stuff.
