Looking at houses tomorrow!

My DH and I are going to see about five houses tomorrow.  Any tips?!

Re: Looking at houses tomorrow!

  • Take notes and pictures to refresh your memory about the houses individually.  make sure to check age and condition of AC/furnace/water heater/windows, etc.  Don't get blinded by fresh paint and flooring, look at the details.  Look at ceilings for water stains, etc.  Have fun!!  If you find a house you like drive around the whole neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods to make sure it is where you want to live.

  • Ditto on the notes and pictures.   Take your time, look at details.

One thing I did the first time around was sat down around the house - and just looked around.   It sounds creepy but here's an example:   In one house, I sat down (fully clothed) on the toilet (with the seat down) in the master bathroom - and noticed that while sitting on the toilet, there was a window I was looking directly out of, and I could see into the neighbors living room.     That house was on a lot that was too small/close to neighbors, but it took that experience for us to realize we wouldn't like that.

Try your best to look past decorating/furniture, and focus on the features of the house and the lot/location.

  • Take pictures!  After five houses, you will start to confuse the details of each :)  Also, do not feel you need to scrutinize the houses your first time through.  We would do a cursory visit and then, after seeing all of them, we would decide if there were ones we wanted to take a closer look at.  We would schedule a second showing and it was then that we would really look at all the tiny details.
