We just closed on a new construction home on Friday. Everything is perfect! Except one thing: the W/D closet. It's so small. Basically, a top load washer with dryer attached above would fit. It's a 4 bedroom home and a full sized washer and dryer is only appropriate. We bought a 3.5 cu ft front loader W/D set that are stackable. 3.5 cu ft isn't huge, but it isn't the smallest. The closet door won't close because the machine sticks out too far.
Would it be under warranty that the closet size was a builder error and not totally unreasonable to ask him to re-wire everything for the basement? I would think we would be SOL, but the whole builder error term intrigues me.

How did you not notice that it was too small when you did your walk through? Or at inspection? I don't understand how this is an error. Do you have the dimensions it was supposed to be on a blueprint somewhere and it doesn't match up? Or did you think it was ok at first and now you have changed your mind?
The oversight was our error. We didn't account for the dryer vent sticking out as far as it did. Whether we could fit a 2.3 cu foot front loader in the closet is questionable.
I'm reaching, I know. But I can't understand how it wasn't taken into account that an apartment sized W/D would be appropriate for a 4 bedroom home.
Your error is your error. You should have scrutinized blue prints and measurements of everything both before construction began and at your walk through.
Our kitchen allows for a 39" fridge. In order to get our 36" fridge in the house we had to remove the front door, the doors and drawer for the fridge and it was still a tight fit. I'm not going to go after the builder because he didn't make the door big enough for something that I purchased and I could have measured for.
I did call the builder today because we are having issues with our hot water heater that is 2 weeks old.
And technically a one piece stackable unit is plenty sufficient for your 4 bedroom house. You just can't do massive loads of laundry and you will have to do more of them. Might not be what you want but this should have been taken into consideration.
i think the builder is super cheaping out if for a 4br house they didn't make the closet large enough to accomodate a normal SEPARATELY stacking washer and dryer. i'd wonder what else they'd cheaped out on too.
it sounds like it was your error, as you acknowledged, but there's no reason why you can't ask (and you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar).
