need ideas for anniversary (daytime) date

DH and I usually try to go for a weekend away for our anniversary, but this year with the LO and new house, it's a bit harder.  We also don't have any family in town to babysit for a night and we've leaned on our friends to babysit twice in the last month for weddings.  So, we decided to take off of work on our anniversary, bring LO to daycare, and spend the day doing fun stuff around here that's hard to do with LO in tow.

I think we have a general idea of the day, but would love suggestions for restaurants for breakfast and lunch, and any other fun activities to fill the day. Going to the movies is high on the list since we can't go with LO.   Oh, and we're kind of looking to splurge on breakfast and/or lunch since we aren't really doing a nice dinner.

We're in Bethesda/Rockville area, but aren't opposed to going into DC or NoVa if there's a great spot.

TIA for recs!

Re: need ideas for anniversary (daytime) date

  • We did something similar for our anniversary.  We had lunch at Rasika in DC and then went to the Newseum b/c neither of us had gone in it's new location (I went years ago when it was in Rosslyn).

I've also had very good lunches at Proof and Poste.  We tried to get a reservation for Central for lunch, but they were booked.  That was our first choice, fwiw.

  • Does Proof do lunch? I work near there and walked by around lunch time and never seen them open.

I have had lunch at Poste and it was yummy. They have a beautiful little garden that would be nice to sit in. There are a lot of museums nearby and of course there is the movie theatre in Gallery Place.

I don't know the details on lunch places in Georgetown but that would be a nice place for a day date. I love just walking around the neighborhood. If the waterfront restaurants still have outdoor seating, that would be nice and there is a movie theatre there as well.

Have fun!! DH and I did something like this when LO was around this age.

    Does Proof do lunch?

They did as of a year or so ago.  I went with my parents when I was pregnant (so maybe 1.5 years ago?)  The lunch menu is different than the dinner one (lighter fare in general) but it was still fantastic.

  • We did a daytime museum date with lunch at Central recently. I agree with the above recommendations!

  • Oh, also, I'm going to strongly advocate going into the city. (unsolicited opinion ahead!!!!!)

First off, you'll be more likely to visit nearby Bethesda/Rockville haunts for dates in the future.  They'll be closer, so it'll mean not paying a babysitter while you're sitting on metro/in traffic going into DC.

Second off, if you're anything like us, you don't get into DC to do "fun" things as much as you used to.  Therefore, going into DC almost feels like a little vacation....getting away from the usual & going into something different but familiar.

Third off, in DC you can be just blocks away from nice restaurants, museums, *and* a movie theater so you can really maximize your time sans kiddo!

Good point kastle! We rarely go into the city for date nights nowadays. DH is sad since he doesn't work there that he rarely goes to DC.

  • We did the same thing for our anniversary. We went to lunch at Volt in Frederick, MD. The food was great and I definitely recommend it! We also walked around historic downtown Frederick for a bit.

  • Thanks everybody - I knew you'd have good suggestions!  Good point about going someplace like DC or Frederick since we don't go there often (at all?) with the kiddo.  We'd probably drive either way, since I need someplace to pump - too bad I can't be completely carefree yet!

  • If you decided to do Frederick and go to Volt, what about hitting some of the Frederick/Mt. Airy wineries while you are out there?  Linganore and Sugarloaf come to mind.  Or if it is a nice day, you could go to Cunningham Falls Park (sort of like Great Falls Park).
