moving companies?

usually we move ourselves but the move out/sell/buy/move in is making it tricky. I called ateam movers and broad street movers. I think mambo is pricey.

Any good suggestions?

Re: moving companies?

  • We used Lancpa personal solutions.  I think they are out of Lancaster, but do travel.

They were the best money I have ever spent on anything ever.  I will never, ever, ever move without movers again.

  • Twice now I have gone to U-Haul and booked movers through them. You rent the U-Haul yourself and the movers are just labor. I have had great experiences with this - different moving companies each time.

do you mind asking me how much it cost?

    you can email me dmaf14@aol.com

beagles: lancaster is a bit far when i have to pay them for two days of coming out

  • I gotta tell you, we loved Mambo. They said it would take 6-8 hours to move, and it took 3.5. This has happened to friends before, too (they quote way over what it will actually take).

As long as you have everything packed and ready to go, they're really fast.

omg this just happened i was 8 hours wtf?

  • We used Isaac's for our move out, and they're now storing our stuff for us. Quote was accurate (around 8 hours, but we were moving out of a 3 story townhouse + basement) and the guys were great. They're based in South Philly, I believe.

ETA: The time included transportation, and the time it took them to unload at the storage facility.

  • We also used Mambo and were quoted 3 hours I think and they were done in under that  Mind you, we were only moving from an apartment to a house, but nevertheless, they may quote higher to be on the safe side.  I was very happy with them.

I would think your move is very similar to ours, so I think that time estimate is really high. We also had little upstairs furniture since we had built-in wardrobes --- the only thing was a crib, bookcase, and our ikea malm bed that was already taken apart). We had a 2-story rowhouse, and our new house was about a 20-30 minute drive. It took just under 4 hours.

Yeah dude I have a feeling we are twinsies. Was it 4 hours for move out, move in? Total? Also the stuff upstairs can easily be moved down by us to cut time.

Yep, it was 4 hours total -- I believe there was a $30 fuel charge added, plus we gave a $20 tip to each of the guys b/c they busted their butts! I called them ahead of time and asked what packing tips they had, to make it go faster. We moved a good amount of stuff from our upstairs and basement, into the living room and had it all piled up. Also, they prefer clothes/bedding in garbage bags...they threw them out of the upstairs windows!

Silly hipster moving company. I think my husband would straight up have a heart attack if they dropped stuff out windows. Ok I'm going to give them a call.

did anyone have the moving company store over night?

Don't worry - they caught everything before it hit the ground (and it was only bedding and clothes that they tossed). :)

Another reason I love Mambo is b/c our greyhound got out when they were carrying out furniture, and the movers ran after her and helped us track her down (I was soo upset and worried b/c greyhounds run fast! I was screaming the F word while running through the streets and making cars slow down.)

Ok - this is weird with Mambo because when we moved in 2007 then were PISSED we had all linens and clothing in garbage bags.   Granted, we have a lot of clothes... but apparently they can pile boxes on top of each other and carry like 5 behind their backs (which I'm sure you witnessed!) but garbage bags, they could only grab two or three at a time.  We were in an apt building so they couldn't just do the throw out the window thing.

I agree, I think 8 hours is way too much but I think they are trying to cover their butts in case they do run into too much stuff, or a snafu.  They quoted us 4-6 hours and it took about 7.  We were not happy with them at all because basically they had overbooked and were told that they would arrive around 2pm.  They arrived at between 7 and 8pm that night (after me calling all afternoon like, where are they??).  We were moving from No Libs to South Philly.  We didn't actually finish in S. Philly till after 2am.  I remember feeling so bad for our new neighbors - we told them we were going to be in between 2 and 6, not 2 am and there was so much commotion.  Not to mention, I felt bad for the poor movers because they said they had said they had started at 7am and were exhausted. We were their third move of the day.  There were 3 guys and we tipped each $20.

And then there was one guy had stomach issues and had to use our bathroom... and the smell then permeated our apt.  Um, I almost yakked.

But I think that's why they estimate so much time now.  And for the record, I am the only person I have ever heard of that had a bad experience with them. I have a coworker who has used them like 5 times.

And FTR, it only took 7 hrs not because of our stuff, but because they were moving at a snail pace.  They apologized for being tired and then this dude was in the bathroom for like an hour... seriously. It was ridic.  But not totally their fault - I can't blame the guy for being sick and/or the fact that their boss effed up and overbooked them.

  • Most people I know who have had good experiences have been with either Mambo or Brothers.
