Pediatric Dentist

My poor little niece (age 4) has 7 cavities and her dentist in Monroe can't work on her b/c she isn't reacting well in the chair.  She never had a problem with the dentist before with regular check ups.

She was referred to a pediatric dentist and had a consult today with Dr. Herman in New City.  MIL is very comfortable with this dentist, but she is out of network.  She gave my niece 3 options- 2 or 3 sessions in the office with nitrous oxide, a couple of sessions with in-office sedation, or 1 session with general in the hospital.

Is anyone familiar with this type of work on kiddos and can offer any advice?  Any input on staying with Dr. Herman, or a suggestion for another pediatric dentist? We are Orange, but willing to travel.

My niece is under SIL's insurance (public school teacher in Orange) and SIL will make calls on Monday to check her coverage.  Poor little kid, it never ends for her :(

Thanks, Ladies!

Re: Pediatric Dentist

  • I switched to a pediatric dentist that will not use any sedation or nitrous.

I had taken my DS to a dentist that used those and to this day he is very afraid of the dentist. It just didn't seem right that I had to do that for him to get fillings that could not have been that deep.

I suggest that she try to have another set of xrays taken. I found out from my new dentist that he probably only needed one of the fillings he actually had gotten at the other dentist.

I hate the dentist myself but I am so comfortable with our new ped dentist. I feel very lucky to have found him.

  • i dont have any advice but a caution- i know a lot of pediatric dentists wont take any insurance at all.  we're looking for one that does in our area and cant find one.  i hope you have better luck than we do.  im hoping a family practice dentist might be good at dealing with children?

  • Dr. Herman is WONDERFUL. That is who pulled Drew'stooth when he fell. They saw us 20 mins later we called, we all SO nice, and Dr. Herman was great with him. They were out of Network us too, but the billing department was so nice and submitted the bills to our insurance company and we got reimbursed within 2 weeks.

I think its worth a shot with the gas. My friends husband is a regular dentist, and he told me during our whole fiasco that gas was perfectly ok for a child (even Drews age). We opted to just use Novocaine and get it out. It took all of 2 seconds.

Good luck to her. Its scary enough for me as an adult to go. Poor kid. I hope it goes well.

  • We use a pediatric dentist in middletown and adore her.  She accepts our insurance as well (delta).  Her name is Geri Waldman out of dolson ave dental.  She was great with K.
  • We take Mini to the same practice but we see Dr Chaly. They really are wonderful. I am terrified of the dentist and they put me at ease which made our visit so much easier. As an aside, if the cavity problem is not hygiene related I would ask about having your niece's teeth sealed. I know that it's typically only done to adult molars when they come in but sometimes a kid's baby teeth have deep pits and grooves and are more susceptible to decay no matter how well they brush and floss.

  • There is a pediatric dentist in the central valley/highland mills area. Her name is dr dayna olstein and I have heard great things. I don't know if she accepts insurance.

  • Thanks so much, ladies!  I hate seeing that little one suffer.  She's going through a rough time at school and now has to deal with this.  Poor kid's whole life since she was 2 months old has been full of turmoil. If you can keep both of my nieces in your T&Ps, I'd appreciate it.  Their family life is not so stable right now.
