I saw that you said you wanted to have yours bricked in...
be careful and make sure you really read the laws.
My dad has the bottom part of his bricked. His house is on a curve, and this man (50s?) was really drunk, took the curve too fast, plowed into his mailbox, then down the yard into a tree. My stepmom was home alone with my nephew (who was 9 at the time). They heard the bang, ran outside, called 911, then got the neighbor to life the bike (which was burning hot) off the guy's pinned leg. The doctors said my stepmom being there saved the guy's life.
Well, turns out the man was drunk because he was depressed over finding out he was about to have his house taken away for not paying his mortgage.
So he got the genius idea to sue my dad for having the bricked mailbox.
Long story short... 2 years of fighting with lawyers, insurance companies, etc, the case was dropped.
But yeah, there are VERY specific laws about bricking mailboxes because if people do hit them, it's more often fatal.
Just wanted to give you a head's up.
Re: --->Sunshine<-- re: mailboxes
oh wow- thanks something to look out. Sorry your dad had to go through that.
Were the laws city/county or state?
I ask because we are the only ones in our part of the neighborhood that doesn't have bricked in boxes. I was against them at first b/c we have a long,long driveway and it would be pretty easy for anyone ( to be honest I'm mostly thinking of my sister) to mess up and hit the box.
On the other hand dealing with the drama of mailbox down is crazy. USPS won't deliver, the PO is only open 9-5 blah, blah. Last time we missed out on some pretty important pieces of mai that ended up lost ( My offer letter, $1k check) it just wan't worth the headache. Ugh
Who knew a mailbox was so much drama- lol
Thanks again- I'll check it out before we decide if it's worth the risk.
I don't know the specifics, but there were details about how high up the brick could go, how far from the street it had to be, etc.
We never knew there were laws like this either... I mean, you see bricked boxes all of the time. I guess people just don't check into it unless something bad happens.
