sunshine re: hair

I saw your post in the dyeing your child's hair thread.  I'm teaching my kids about personal narratives this week and I found the neatest picture book in the public library called I Love My Hair.  It's all about the bonding of a mother and a little girl as the mother combs the girl's (unrelaxed) hair and talks about how special her hair is because it can be styled in so many different ways.  It links the styles to things in nature and had beautiful illustrations.  It also addressed the little girl being teased about her hair.  My students loved it.  Anyway, I just wanted to recommend it to you in case you were interested.

Re: sunshine re: hair

  • OMG this is awesome!

    Thanks!

I wish they had this for me when I was little. For me, I since I grew up in Germany  I struggled with accepting that I didn't have hair like everyone else . Thankfully I was never teased but people always wanted to touch my hair.

This might be my christmas gift for all my little nieces and goddaughters this year. Natural hair is the "in" thing now even though it's always been that way for me.

  • You're welcome!  And I didn't realize that you grew up in Germany- that's neat!

I'm really glad that I found the book.  I always got made fun of for my hair when I was growing up because it was very frizzy and unruly, so it really touched a chord in me.

And I always read my kids the little blurbs about the author that are in the dust jackets, and reading this one made me aware that I don't expose my kids to enough female African American authors.  They thought it was really cool that the author was a Harvard grad and I got lots of stories during writing time about how they were going to go to Harvard like Miss Natasha.  Smile
