I'm hating on the facebook changes.
Mostly the way they determine top stories.
My top stories this morning were 1) that Laura was going yard saleing with her sister and 2) my college roomate is working on her Christmas cards today.
I had to scroll down a whole lot to find out my friend's newborn was admitted to NICU overnight.
Now, as much as I love Laura and roomie, there's no way their news trumps that - and I'm mad at FB for saying it does.
Re: I'm hating on the facebook changes.
My biggest gripe is that there's no way to personalize it anymore. If you want to sort by 'top stories' (which I agree is silly how they try to determine what is actually a top story for you), you should be able to do that. If you want to sort by Recent Stories, you should be able to do that as well. I did notice that after the first day, they added a link so that you could jump immediately to your Recent Stories.
For me, I was always one to go from the top and scroll all the way down until I had reached the stories I'd already read. There really aren't that many Top Stories (at least on mine, there's maybe 4 or 5 at any given time), so it's not a huge deal. I do absolutely LOVE that when you go to write on someone's wall for their birthday, you don't actually have to leave the main page. Which is really helpful for me on May 15th when I've got like 10 friends all born on that day.
This is me too. Although like you, I don't have that many top stories either, LOL. But I DO NOT like how there are two places to have to read updates and such (the little thing on the side) and while sometimes I like the bigger sized pictures on the main page, like when someone has wedding pictures or a cute baby pic, I am not such a fan when girls are posting pictures they've taken of themselves, like one of the girls I went to high school with. Not something I need to see that big. I also just feel like it's messy and hard to follow, it's probably the two different update places that make me feel like that.
So I saw this on a friends page the other day and decided to try it. If you want your facebook back to showing only recent stories do this:
*******To EVERYONE WHO HATES THIS FB LAYOUT... THIS HELPS******* "HOW TO GET YOUR FEED BACK TO BE ONLY "timestamped" . if you want your feed to go back to normal go to your account and go to notifications. At the top right is a box that says email frequency. Uncheck that box and your feed will show all the posts again. Then go to your home page and for each post in the "Top Stories" click on the down arrow in the upper right and "unmark as top story" - now your newsfeed will be setup by timestamp rather than randomly picking "top stories".
I will say that I have had to unmark top stories about once a day, but I think that will stop once I unmark a story for all of my friends. And for the rest of the day, my facebook is top story free!
Hope this helps you ladies!
My Blog
Thanks for that tip! I am definitely trying it out.
The other thing that I have realized is you used to be able to "hide" a story on your news feed, and it remained hidden. Now every time I go back to my page, the things I've hidden are back and I have to hide them again! If I didn't want to see them the first time then I don't want to see them this time around either.
This.
But oddly, the layout hasn't really changed when I use my iPad. I access FB on my iPad through the web browser not an app or anything. The new ticker thing is there, but there aren't top stories. It's weird.
