I just have all sorts of forum ammo today, lol.
Driving home today I saw a few "vote NO issue (whatever)" signs in peoples' front yards. This got me thinking that maybe I should start voting. With DH and I having a fixed location of residence for the next (at least) 5 or so years it's probably time we start paying attention to what goes on around us. I was always of the mindset that my vote doesn't count anyways, and I generally have no clue as to government and current events. DH and I agree that if these issues are going to be costing us money, or effecting how our taxes are spend, we should probably start voting on them.
Re: Do you vote?
Absolutely. Every election. It's false to think that your vote doesn't count. It does! Your vote can be the one vote that decides the winner in your county, which could decide the winner in your state, which could swing the vote of the country. Just because the president isn't decided by popular vote doesn't mean your vote is any less important. And since local elections are by popular vote, it's easier to see how your vote affects the outcome.
I don't pretend to know everything there is to know about every issue. But there are key topics that are most important to me. I can disagree with a candidate when it comes to some social issues and still vote for him, but never when it comes to fiscal issues. The man (or woman?) that is most in line with my views gets my vote!
Do the creep.
It's nice tho! Probably cuz of all your rain today ;-)
I vote when I am informed enough about the things on the ballot to make an educated choice. I vote every presidential election no matter what tho. I sometimes sort of forget to vote, and DH gets mad at me! haha He's always of the mind that your vote counts, and you should participate in the governing of your world, you know? He's right of course.
Also, I sort of believe that you don't have a "right" to complain about something if you didn't vote. You didn't try to change it; so you don't get a say...sort of.
I agree with this. Why should someone get to complain about something when they didn't bother to try changing it?
I always vote, regardless of the fact that I haven't set down permanent roots. I don't think that's a very good excuse, honestly, but to each their own. I try to research candidates (although there are always a lot of judge positions up for election, and I don't bother trying to keep track of those) and issues. I just think it's an important thing to do.
Blog
I've voted in the presidential elections - I skipped on in there when I was in college and of the mindset that i was pretty ill-informed at the time, not in a permanent place yada-yada.
However, this last election DH and I were in our "forever town" (hehe can't call it the forever home since we are in process of moving to what is our forever home in the same town) and we spent one afternoon looking up all of the candidates and trying to make informed decisions on who to vote for. It was cute because right before we went to vote DH was like "who am I supposed to vote for again?" making it sound like I had told him who to pick which wasn't true!
I also believe that every vote counts! We tracked our precincts results online and since we currently live in the country in a rural area our precinct only had a little over 100 people who voted, we thought it was interesting to see the results for the governor in our precinct only won by 1 or 2 votes and we were like see if we hadn't voted our precinct would have gone the other way for governor!
This exactly. I will not vote for something/someone if I am not informed enough to make an educated opinion on it. I hate it when people say things like, "Oh, I'm a Democrat so I'll be voting for him," or "Well, the Republicans favor this so I'll vote for it since I'm a Republican." I guess I'm an Independent, because I vote for whomever I think will do the best job, regardless of political party. My opinions tend to side more with the Democrats, but I certainly don't consider myself to be one as I sometimes disagree with their side to the extreme. I think it's so important to be educated and not just vote because you "are" one party or the other, but vote for the topic/person who you think will supply the best results.
Totally agree with you louieblue! I haven't missed an election since I started voting when I was 18! Municiple, Provincial and Federal - and we have our Provincial one coming up on October 6th. Every vote does count and I think it's so important for citizens to get out and exercise their democratic right to be involved in the process! We are so very fortunate to have this right/freedom, so don't take it for granted - get informed, get involved and certainly go out and vote!
You really should be voting. Every vote Does count. Just think, what if everybody thought the same way, and nobody voted? That is the start of a dictatorship.
And local issues aside, think of the all hard work and sacrifice the woman before you did to ensure you have the right to vote. The suffragettes ensured that we can be heard by our own voice, not just the voice of our husbands. So if not for any other reason, vote so that their work for you was not in vain.
( Sorry, that sounded a bit preachy preachy!!)
