I know I always seem to post cover letter questions.
Anyways, I am working on my cover letter for 2 job postings. I feel like I need to add something about what I have been doing for the past 3 years. On my resume I do list myself as a solo practitioner and my contract job that I have had since May but I feel like I should address the "psuedo-gap" in the resume. I have done legal work on my on and it directly relates to my previous practice area and what this one is for. Does saying something to the effect of "during the past several years I have maintaned and expanded my skill set in the areas of probate and estate planning". I don't know if I am causing a bigger problem by mentioning it in the cover letter and drawing attention to it.
Second question, I started classes at Lone Star college to be able to sit for the CPA exam. I am not earning a certificate or degree there just taking the classes that I need. How do I list that on the resume or do I just say it in the cover letter?
HELP!
Re: HR peeps or really anyone who can help with a cover letter
I think an attorney should weigh in because culture of different organizations would heavily influence my advice.
However, I would sum it up that for the past 3 years you worked contract off and on while being a stay at home mother.
I definitely think you should explain any significant gap and you have an awesome excuse. But emphasizing where you have had the opportunity to keep up your skills is important because I understand finding a job for attorneys can be challenging in this economy.
KJR, MGR, other attorneys can you weigh in?

i agree with mb. include the explanation of the gap in employment and let them know what you have been doing.
i would have to see your resume to see how to fit the classes in. can you list some of the classes you are taking and then add the estimated date you are sitting for the exam?
