Should I call?

I interviewed for a position about a month ago. I felt that the interview went very well and they were enthusiastic about me. I sent a thank you email promptly. When I interviewed, I was told that they were at the beginning of the process.

My question is, would it be okay for me to call and follow up? I'm like 90% sure I didn't get the job, but that 10% of uncertainty is killing me. My DH suggested that I call and say that I would like to know if the position has been filled or if I am still being considered, as I have received another offer, although this position would be my first choice (wouldn't sound as run-on-y over the phone hopefully). I haven't actually received another offer...but that makes me sound less desperate. Or should I just accept that the writing is on the wall and I didn't get the job, and I shouldn't bother them? Would an email be better than a phone call?

Re: Should I call?

  • After a month I don't see what you have to lose with a follow-up call.  I don't know why you need to lie and say you have another offer though. They probably aren't going to mind that you call just to check in on the status.
  • Yeah, I guess he was thinking that if I call just to follow up that it makes me sound more desperate...although do companies really care if you're desperate? They probably like it, actually--you're more willing to wait on them/accept less money! =P

But thanks for your input! I agree, I probably have nothing to lose.

  • Don't lie when you call. Just call, and say you were following up on Position X. Mention that you interviewed on [Date] and you wanted to know the status of the position.

    Done.

  • Meh, well I just called and got her voicemail...sooo a lot of freaking out for nothing.

Yes, of course...but I'm doubtful that I'll receive a call back. I guess we'll see!

  • Yes yes call!

I'm going through this.... I called and the poor girl was just so swamped and didn't have a chance to call me that they wanted me in for a second... and now they're waiting to schedule the third (and final!) interview.

I wouldn't say that you have another offer.  The reason why I say this is that when DH was interviewing to fill his department, he had a candidate tell him that they had another offer.  Since it was going to take some time to interview everyone else and make a decision, his manager said to not offer the position to this particular candidate because they didn't want to have this candidate turn down another position when they weren't even positive on this person AND the process was going to be more drawn out.

When you call, just inquire about the position and express your enthusiasm at the prospect of joining the team.

  • Hopefully you hear back from the agency.  I like to gauge a company based on how quickly they call me back.  I would call back in a couple days if she doesn't return your call, and leave a final voicemail.  If you don't hear anything then assume the writing is on the wall and keep moving.  Good luck!

Thanks! I'll do that...I also think it would be pretty rude if I never got a call back in response to my call, but I can't say I would be too surprised.

  • Definitely call to follow-up, but if there is not another offer on the table, don't tell them there is.

  • Well, like I said, I called yesterday and left a voicemail (just asking about the status of my application--after reading your advice, I agre with all of you on not lying) and I still haven't heard back!

  • Yes -- you should definitely follow up. This happened at my current job and they were just waiting for a position to open up before they could make an offer. If you show you're still interested, they will be more likely to consider you now or in the future.
