Girl toddler room

We are listing our home for sale.  Three bedrooms.  One is currently my toddler girl's room.  It is freshly painted neutral.  However it has a cute tree decal on one wall and it has bright chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling.  Both are brand new (hung before we realized we'd sell).  People who come over heavily comment on how adorable her room is.  Should we leave the decal and lanterns up or remove them before showing?  If we remove them, the room is incredibly plain and boring.  Yet I realize it would be more neutral for buyers.  It could be listed for many months and my daughter will be still living in there.  Thoughts?

Re: Girl toddler room

  • Are you planning to take the decal with you or leave it?  I think if possible you could have your agent include in the notes that it is an easily removed decal so prospective buyers don't look at it as something they have to paint.
As a buyer my big concern would be the lanterns and how they are attached to the ceiling.  If they are screwed in I think it might be preferable to take them down and patch and paint the ceiling.

The decal is easily removable and I could take it off now, however I worry if I remove both items, it will look way too plain in the room.  I do realize that neutral is usually better though.

  • My son's room is a beige color with floor-to-ceiling white birch tree decals on the wall behind his crib. We had no feedback on them, good or bad. Our agent did ask us when we listed if they were difficult to remove and we told her no, they just peel off and to let anyone know who asks. We had three offers on our house and it sold quick for our area. I would just leave them up.

I'd probably take the lanterns down just because they're easy to remove and not really needed. The bright colors may make it look a little busy to buyers. We tried to clear out as much as we could before we listed so buyers could get a better feel for the rooms.

  • I would leave them but you can make notes that the decal are easily removable and you will take the lantern.

Both of my kids rooms are decorated (my son's walls are tan, but daughters are pink), but the rest of my house is totally neutral and de-personalized.   My take on it (and my realtors take) was that the kids rooms were fine as is as long as we picked them up and made them look clean.

We've been on the market a month, currently have 1 offer pending, and another possible one - and no negative feedback.
