Hello, I am sure everyone has posted this to death, but I am new so I get to ask! Where is everyone stationed/located? The kids and I are at NAS Whidbey and my DH is temporarily stationed in Atsugi, Japan but he's currently deployed on the USS GW. I'm hoping to find others who are here, there, or have SO on the GW. Thanks!
Re: Where?!
We're just across the water in Everett.

We'll be there by the Spring. Actually coming out there in November for house hunting.
Are you thinking of on-base housing or off-base?
Well if you need any help navigating around here let me know!

Thanks will do! I think we will probably buy in Chesapeake since it's central to all 3 bases. H will definitely be in Norfolk and Newport News, and then his shore duty would likely be in VA Beach. I'm sure I will be ridiculously lost out there. When we first moved here I didn't go anywhere without my GPS for the first few months.
Then it's your lucky day! Chesapeake is my expertise. I grew up here and live there currently. Norfolk kinda sucks and Virginia Beach is really expensive if you want to live somewhere that isn't ghetto.
:P

Haha so you're saying Chesapeake is ghetto? How ghetto? Where I grew up is considered ghetto so I can handle as long as I'm not going to get mugged when I walk my dog or anything.
Nonono.
Chesapeake is nice. I love it here.
Norfolk and the non-expensive areas of Virginia Beach are ghetto.

I'd be reeeeallly careful about South Norfolk area; the prices are attractive? and there is a reason. That's not to say there aren't some nice neighborhoods within SN; but it can be kind of hard to judge at times. Great Bridge, Hickory, and Grassfield are some of the more highly desired areas. Deep Creek isn't bad and Western Branch is pretty decent - just a little bit further out there and closer to Suffolk. Indian River gets a big hells no from me - mainly because of the school district.
Thanks for the info! I definitely just went and checked out my favorites from our list so far, and 1 was in Indian River district. The others all seemed to be in Chesapeake SD, with Oscar Smith listed as the high school. Does that make sense to you?
Oscar Smith used to be a ghetto school but it's really cleaned up with the IB and great sports programs.
Greenbrier is a nice area to live too, it's in a less rural setting than Hickory and Great Bridge.

Oscar Smith has definitely come a long way from 20 years ago? just there are some areas that are Section 8 - and you can tell when you drive through. DH and I were thinking of the new carriage home neighborhood off of Dominion esp. since the price is right. But, being next door to a land fill and bordered on the other side by poorly kept Sect. 8 deterred us from there.
But. There are definitely some REALLY nice neighborhoods in OS as well. Definitely do not buy sight unseen.
Greenrbrier is also nice as Mary said; definitely less rural and more "city". And I put that in quotes because there really isn't anything city at all about Chesapeake.
Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. H and I are going out there the week of Thanksgiving for house hunting so we will definitely be checking out whatever it is before we buy it. When we came here for house hunting I was shocked at how nice houses looked online, and how horrible they looked IRL just from the outside. Not gonna lie, I'll probably be asking you guys a lot more questions when it gets closer too.
No problem! The brain is open to picking.
