Which thermometer for LO?

Do you have a specific thermometer that you use/bought when LO was born? We have one on our registry that is an ear one, but not wondering who likes ear vs. rectal, etc.

This is the one on our list:  http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11972045&fromRegistryNumber=46759580&product_skn=738304

I'm open to suggestions! I'm on a roll with spending $$ today. Just spent $265 on Amazon with things we need for the baby that we didn't get at my shower. Next is to go to Babies R' Us once we get our coupon/s and get what we still need there.

Re: Which thermometer for LO?

  • We have and love this one. It's the 3 in one- rectal, arm, mouth. We used it as rectal when he was itty bitty (with the covers) and now we use it under his arm and add a degree to the reading as per our pedi for an accurate reading. I like that even if you are using it in the dark you can see the colors (green is "good", yellow is "borderline", red is "fever") so that's nice. It's definitely nothing fancy, but it's gotten us through many a fever in the past year.

FWIW, I borrowed a forehead one from my friend when our battery died and he had a fever. It was "okay" but it beeped SO loud that you couldn't use it at night.

  • We have this one. It has 3 attachments--underarm, rectal, and oral. It's a quick read and I really like this one. It also has a "fever alert" that will light up when the temp is considered high for whatever area you're using (a temp that's underarm may not be considered a fever, but that same temp would be considered one orally).

  • We have a couple of regular ol' digital thermometers that we used under her arm when she was small. We never had a fever serious enough to go the rectal route (thankful for that).

We have an ear thermometer that we use now that she's older.

  • We always used a regular digital rectally when she was itty bitty (I actually think it's easier than mouth....).  Now we have an ear one.
  • Just don't get the one that you hold away from the head and it takes the temp without touching the baby from a distance.  Yeah, sure, ideal for when the kid is sleeping.  I didn't realize how impossible it would be to get her head to hold completely still for the darn thing to work.  It will work better when she is older, so it's not a complete waste, but definitely not immediately useable.

  • We just have a digital rectal and have only taken temps that way.  Our pedi and my friend thats a pedi said not to bother with the other thermometers and that rectal is the most accurate.

Agree!  When I have a mommy call in the newborn period, I always ask how they took it.  In the hospital they use the wand-temple thermometers. I distrust those things so much!

  • I use an ear thermometer for the boys and a digital oral thermometer for Lily. I've never had to do a rectal temp on any of my kids.
