FFC/vent- the dreaded wedding gap

We have a wedding this weekend and there is a gap.  It's all downtown, so yes, we can go get a drink somewhere, but honestly, the last thing we need before a wedding cocktail hour is another drink, nor will I want to walk around in my high heels and formal attire in the late afternoon.

Re: FFC/vent- the dreaded wedding gap

  • Gah, I hate that. It feels so disrespectful of my time. How long is the gap?
  • We have a wedding this weekend and the distance between the ceremony and reception is close to an hour.  Thankfully, we live close to the ceremony so it's not too bad, but it's still kind of odd to make people drive that far in between two events.
  • That kind of sucks. How long a gap are we talking?

I had my ceremony and reception all in one place, which was kind of sweet in that regard.

  • I really hate that.I also hate when the bride and groom are late showing up to the reception venue AFTER there has been a gap. Like mrsremy, we had our ceremony & reception in one place, too.

  • Gaps are horrible!  The first wedding I went to with DH was fancy schmancy, and had almost a 3 hour gap!  I couldn't believe it.

We did everything we could to prevent a gap at ours because they're so miserable.

How long is the gap for you?

  • If the ceremony starts on time it will be at least an hour- which I know isn't THAT long but the ceremony and reception venues are only a 5 minute walk from one another so it's not like we are going to be able to kill time getting from one spot to the other. The people who are staying at the hotels are going to be getting to the ceremony early, so they will have even more "downtime."

If we were paying a sitter, I would be even more annoyed at having to pay for the gap.

  • that's annoying.

I went to a wedding a few years ago where the wedding was in Bethesda/Chevy Chase and the reception was at a house in McLean, VA.  It was a total PITA - I think there was a 2 hour gap.  I don't even really understand why, since it was a house, they obviously could have started immediatley.

We went to 2 weddings in NY w/ 3 hour gaps between the start of the ceremony & the start of the reception- one we ended up going to a random bar and eating bar food & drinking during the gap. With the other the church was on the South Fork of Long Island (where the Hamptons are) and the reception was on the North Fork- thankfully it wasn't on a summer weekend because the traffic between the 2 is horrendous. Lots of people wore different outfits to the separate portions.

  • Ugh... I hate that.  We went to a wedding once that was a few hours away from home AND had a 2 hour gap between events.  It sucked b/c we couldn't go home, we didn't know the area, and basically had nothing to do for those 2 hours.
  • snarky alert but just stay home, if you can't tolerate 1/2 hour then you aren't going to be a very good guest.

I could be illiterate but I'm pretty sure she is saying it's at least an hour- "If the ceremony starts on time it will be at least an hour- which I know isn't THAT long but the ceremony and reception venues are only a 5 minute walk from one another so it's not like we are going to be able to kill time getting from one spot to the other."

  • I hate the long gap.  We once had a wedding that was over an hour between the church and reception and had an extra gap.  We still remember that unhappily.

I think its OK to be annoyed and still go.

  • um yeah, that would also be why I titled this post FFC, the FF stands for Flame-Free, adding to the confession element I am *gasp* a reader, so staying home is definitely not an option.

Last time I checked guests are exactly that guests.

  • I think it's entirely possible to be a good guest and still be annoyed at a gap of at least an hour as Daisy clarified.

The one wedding I've been to with the classic Catholic gap wasn't bad bc the church was about 20 minutes from the hotel, and the hotel was about 20 minutes from the reception site, so that was 40 minutes, and I think it was a 2 hour gap give or take? and the shuttle left from the hotel, so you had to go back there. So we went back and had champagne ha. This was also a wedding with a keg of Resurrection so there was no pretending that it wasn't going to be messy lol.   (and no one was driving.) But other than that i've lucked out.

Anyway - so I get your annoyance, but I still vote for having a drink in between ha.

  • This happened to us a few times. Ceremony at one time and the reception like 2 hours later. So we just hit up a bar nearby.

At our wedding we were suppose to have about 30 to 45 minutes of pictures. It took about 20 minutes to drive the reception location. With a bridesmaid fainting, then pictures and our limo driver taking his good sweet old time, DH and I were about 45 minutes late to our own reception.  It sucked!

That's my kind of wedding :)
  • I knew it was too late for you not to go, I was just trying to demo the point that a short gap is often unavoidable...and it short, just try to be easy going
  • We go back to our hotel and have sex during the gap.

  • My cousin just had an 11AM wedding and a 7PM reception.  Gaps are annoying. We sacrificed my dream outdoor photos at our wedding so that we wouldn't have a gap.
  • i am so glad that everyone i know is married and we don't get invited to weddings anymore, it seems we do more divorce related events now.
