Is it a bad idea to get DH a Kindle while he is deployed? The internet is really bad so I am not sure how hard it will be to download books. It also might be a bad idea with the sand storms but, maybe I am just over thinking it. I know he has been wanting one for a while and I am trying to think of a good birthday present. Any thoughts, opinions, comments, experiences? TIA
Re: Kindle while deployed?
My DH looooved his while he was underway.
Of course he didn't have sand storms to contend with...

H took his. I am not sure how much he is using it. I can mention it to him the next time we talk and find out it he is having any issues.
I sent one to H's ship for our anniversary, and it stopped working less than 2 weeks later. He has to mail it back to Amazon for them to send him a new one, and with how long it takes for stuff to get there it might not make it back before he comes home.
I think in theory it's a great idea, it just hasn't worked out for the best for us.

Thanks I would appreciate that

my currently-reading shelf:
Dh got one right before he deployed. He has used it a lot over there. He has a hard time downloading pretty much anything over there with or without wifi. But he loaded tons of books before he left, and then he loaded more on it when we was here for R&R.
I suggest if you get one for your H, have him load it up with many books before he heads out, because the internet may not be all that great at the best of the bases.
He is already there, he will be home in a couple of months (yay). His internet sucks but he has a buddy who has the fancy expensive internet and he lets him use it sometimes (that seems to work really well) so hopefully if he has issues loading he can borrow his friends internet real quick.

I had my Kindle on my last two deployments to Afghanistan, and it was AWESOME. But then again, I read a LOT. Like, in a 6 month deployment I read about 50 books.
I was at Bagram both times, and the internet there was good enough to download books to my computer, then use the USB cable to sync them to my Kindle. There are some places with WiFi (USO hut, Greenbean) that you could maybe try using your kindle on to sync via WiFi, but it was really easy to upload new books via the USB cable.
I would recommend buying lots of books to pre-load it, if you can. Then when he gets good internet, he can buy a few more at a time depending on how much he reads. An Amazon gift card might also be nice since buying lots of books at once can get expensive.
