Oh, goodness...

DH just informed me that we have about an 80-90% chance of moving to South Korea next year.

*blink*  I knew it was a possibility, but not that it was that likely.

The good news is that it is also highly likely that it would be accompanied, so I could go with him...  We should get better details about what is going on in a month or so.

Pros: it'd be a great experience, and it's a type of job DH needs before he can get promoted

Cons: I'd likely have to quit my job, and finding something there isn't likely.

Re: Oh, goodness...

  • Wow, that would be an experience for sure. I would love to live somewhere in Asia.

What do you do for work? Maybe you can try to find a Federal Job on base?

  • I currently telecommute for a tech company in TX.  But, the time difference might be too much.  Our Asian business is picking up, though, so I might be useful in a different capacity than I currently am in.

I'm a foreign national (Canuck), so while there might be jobs on base, I likely can't get them.  (I can't work on base here, nor for goverment contractors, it seems...  it's a pain)

    So, we'll see...

  • Well, it will be quite an adventure!  I was stationed in Japan and loved the experience.  I hope everything works out in your favor.
  • Korea is awesome :D

  • My best friend just moved to South Korea with her Army husband last month. She is LOVING it sofar. They are able to live together off base, and she got a job teaching english to Korean high schoolers. She is used to the big city life, living in NYC for two years. If you have any questions I can ask her for you! Good luck!
  • Any info I can get would be awesome!  DH has been there before, but quite a while ago.

We wouldn't know where exactly we would end up, just that it would be toward the end of next year, most likely.  There are about 3 different ways this could all play out, and all of them end up in Korea next year.  Hopefully we will have a better idea on location and dates in a month or two.

It's very promising to hear that she has been able to find a job there, off-base.  It gives me hope that I'll be able to find something.

We also will be hoping to live off-base.  My family likes to visit me, and because they are all foreign nationals, we have had some difficulties getting them on base before.  We now just avoid living on base, if we can make that choice.

My husband did mention concerns over services, like healthcare.  He is worried that we might end up at a base that doesn't have much (if any) of a clinic for dependents.  We want to start a family at some point in the not too distant future, but as my age creeps up, I may end up considered high risk simply because of my age, which could turn things into a bit of a pain if clinic access is difficult...  (unless I get pregnant before we move, which is probably not a good idea, I'd be looking at delivering when I am older than 35... that seems to be the age at which folks start getting concerned about risk...)

I'm basically curious about everything.  We had hoped for a European assignment before, but never really thought about an Asian one.  I think it could be a really neat experience.  I've travelled to other Asian countries for work, and it has been neat to see the cultural differences, and experience it all.  But, I don't know if there is much point in, say, taking one of our vehicles, or if it would be bigger than we would be comfortable driving there.  Or, what we should do with the items we don't want to take with us over there...  I understand the army will store excess household goods, but I am betting that storage is not climate controlled, and I'm not sure some of our items would fare well in non-climate controlled storage.

DH has a motorcycle, so I think we would try taking that, and we would definitely sell one of our vehicles (we were planning on replacing it with a new vehicle in the next few months, actually, so this news has stalled that out...).  We're not sure on the other.  We have quite a collection of books, and we would need to decide if we would be taking them with us, or leaving them in storage, or storing them ourselves in climate controlled storage, or using this as a motivator to move into e-books...

So many things to think about!  :)  At least we get a good amount of lead time - we should be able to do a good cull on our household goods, and get a really good idea of what is worth moving, what is worth storing, and what we just need to get rid of...

  • I would feel very fortunate that his orders will be accompanied... Ours was unaccompanied and we are without him for about a year. I'd say enjoy your time, find a job if you can/want, but be happy you're together. =)
