s/o dolls: Barbies

Did you have Barbies as a kid? Were you into them/did you play with them a lot? I remember seeing commercials for Barbies and my friends having them. I begged my mom for one and finally got it for Christmas one year...and after an hour or so I thought it was the most boring thing ever. I guess dolls just weren't my thing. How about you?

Re: s/o dolls: Barbies

  • I had one but I hardly ever played with it. I don't remember why I had it, actually, since I never asked for one. I was never really into dolls either. I thought it might be kind of fun to dress Barbie up, but it was actually kind of a PITA to get clothes on and off her, so that killed the joy for me.

  • Oh yeah i had a bunch of barbies, even had a travel case for them. I also got into trolls--loved those things! My friends and I would play barbies for hours. My bff had her dream house with ken and an elevator. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!

  • I had a HUGE collection of barbies and my little ponies that I usually played with together.  The dolls were riding the ponies in competitions.

I guess I was big into dolls, but I'd play with pretty much anything and everything.  I was also quite committed to my Hot Wheels and playing house.  Reading was also something I did all the time.  I'd read through tons of Boxcar Children, Animorphs, and Babysitter's Club by the time I was 8/9.

  • I played with barbies regularly. Usually my brothers and I would have barbie/G.I. Joe armies and battle against each other. Barbie usually won.

I still have all of my barbies with their original clothing in a box at my parents house. I also have all of my mom's barbies from the early 60's with their clothing, and a few Ken dolls.

  • I liked playing with dolls hair and braiding them.  So, the only Barbie I had was a Twirly Curl Barbie.  The doll had a ton of hair and "twirly-curly" thing to use to play with her hair.

  • I loved Barbies and played with them way longer than I admitted to my friends at the time. Now DD is into Barbies (seems young, but she really does love them) and I play them with her.

I love the Boxcar Children. Babysitter's Club was pretty cool until they started to add new characters.

I had some Barbies but I was more interested in extra things that would be included with the Barbie like lip gloss.

  • I loved my Barbies.  Babie and the Rockers was probably my fave Barbie though.  I had tons of them, and two travel cases for their clothes.  I had a Barbie Town House, even though, I was always bummed that I didn't have the Dream House. My mom saved her Barbie car from 1962, so my dolls had one awesome ride.  I'm kinda sad that my mom threw away all our (my mom's and mine,) Barbies when I was about 20.  I would have liked to have saved my mom's Bubble-cut and the fantastic pink car from the 60s!

  • Despite being a huge tomboy growing up, I absolutely loved Barbies. I didn't have very many, but my cousin had a huge collection and I used to spend hours playing with them at her house.

I always told stories with them. The Barbies had names and back histories. They were friends, got in fights, got divorced. I also told stories with leaves, sticks, and pages of catalogues that I would tear into the shapes of people.

Looking back on it, I probably dealt with a lot of my issues as a child by playing with Barbies. My parents were separated but not divorced for six years (rather confusing to a child) and ambiguous relationships were a common theme in my stories. I also had a doll who had cancer, so I probably knew someone at the time who had that (and later several relatives died of the disease). I even cut that Barbies hair very short--the post chemo look.

  • I had tons of them but was not really into playing with it, was boring to me, gave most of them away to poor children few years ago though. Not the nice ones, lol I still have them, in a box, with their clothes. But I was never into Barbie Dolls, more like those baby dolls that really looks like babies. I have no idea how you ladies call it there?

I used to pretend that I had a baby, and my dad even built a small house for me when I was kid, so I'd put all of my ''babies'' there and pretend that it was my house. It was a phase though, I then gave up on it and went to play games like a boy. I was weird lol

  • Yes we had a bunch of barbies growing up. A lot ended up being passed down to me and my sister from our older cousins. We both played with them a fair amount, and often had barbie going horseback riding on my little pony even though her legs were too long and would drag on the ground! They were just never the same once my sister pulled their heads off though.
