Huh. Thoughts on this article?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44667234/ns/us_news-life/?GT1=43001#.ToCxY-y0M6E

I personally think she's full of it.  She may not be racist according to herself, but I called bullsh!t when I read the part where she "raised the flag higher than the fences her neighbors built" (paraphrased).

I am all about being proud of one's history and heritage, and this is America, so, yeah, I guess she can do whatever she pleases on her property within reason.  But COME ON LADY.  Really?? Really.

Re: Huh. Thoughts on this article?

  • Reading the story, all I could do is roll my eyes.  I'm a born and bred southern belle, but I sure as hell don't own anything with the Confederate flag on it, nor do I know of anyone else who does.  Heck, I don't think I've ever seen the flag flown in my town. (EDIT:  My town flys the American flag and the KY flag.  I meant town like, people who live in my town, not government buildings)

I think it's ignorant for people to believe the Civil War was fought simply over slavery.  That's not even half of the story.  But I find it even more ignorant for Southerners to not recognize the connotations the flag has in today's culture.  It's become a blatant symbol of racism and I've never met someone who owns an item with the flag on it who isn't a redneck piece of garbage.  Yeah, it's not like the rest of the country doesn't already think that most Southerners are white trash anyway.

I'm proud of where my ancestors came from.  I don't have any ancestors that fought in the Civil War, as far as I know, but regardless, the Confederacy doesn't exist anymore.  That makes it completely pointless to fly the flag.  The Confederacy lost, thank goodness, so these dummies are flying loser flags.

No, this woman is just a racist and she doesn't care whether she's seen as one or not.  I'd never fly a Confederate flag to begin with, but I also have more respect for other humans' feelings than to fly a flag that symbolizes slavery in a predominately black town.  That would be like someone living in a NYC borough whose ancestors came from Germany flying a Nazi flag outside.  Probably would have many Jewish neighbors.  It's racist and it's stupid.

The idiot woman is a racist.  Point blank.

  • I agree with the last line of the story exactly:

"That's all I really have to say. She can do what she wants to do in her yard, but I don't share her beliefs."

It *is* her backyard, and if she wants to be a disrespectful c-u-next-tuesday I guess that's her right. But at the same time I think she needs to be kicked in the throat. She seems like a stubborn old bitty who just wants to oppose everyone else no matter what. But IMHO it's really disrespectful.

    Well put.
