DC Zoo - anyone been? Question..

We will be visiting the zoo next week and I have a few questions.

The strollers that they have for rent, do they have a basket under them to place a bag of snacks and drinks?  I recently had surgery on my arms and I won't be able to carry stuff, so this is kind of important so I can make other arrangements if needed.

Also, the zoo opens at 8:30am, I believe, but the animals are not out until 10am?  Is this correct?  What is the reason for getting there so early if the animals are not out yet?

What would you suggest is a "must" see at the zoo?

Can you recommend a great restaurant in the DC area?  We will be staying just South of the airport.  Thanks!

Thanks so much!

Re: DC Zoo - anyone been? Question..

  • The zoo is free and open early for joggers

So much was under construction the last time we went.  The baby lions were cute but now they are 1 year olds and much bigger!

  • are you going on a week day or weekend? and are you driving or taking the metro?

the only reason I could think of to get there early on a weekend is if you are driving because the parking lots fill up quickly. Other than that, getting there around 10 is fine any day.

I've never rented a stroller at the zoo, but I've seen them and don't remember seeing an under side basket on the ones they have. Although that might have something on the back...sorry, I'm not much help. But if you call (check the website), I'm sure someone there could tell you.

Our favorite things at the zoo are (my son is 2.5):

-the invertebrate house, they have a giant octopus and my son loves feeding time (I think it's at 11am)

-watching the orangutans climb on the "O Line" (usually around 11 or 11:30), it's this series of elevated ropes that the orangutans use to get from one area of the zoo to the other

    -the giant pandas

    -the kids farm

-the giant cats--tigers and lions. the lion cubs are pretty big now, but they are usually pretty playful and fun to watch.

Which airport are you staying near? Reagan?

  • I don't know anything about the strollers, but just a warning that the zoo is quite hilly, so there is a lot of pushing the stroller uphill and downhill. Hopefully that will be okay with your arm injury. Also, the earlier you get there, the better in terms of seeing animals and having them be outside. Honestly though, the past few times I've gone to the zoo, even early in the day, I've seen very few animals. We've given up on going.
  • Thanks ladies!  I've tried calling the zoo but can not get a live person on the phone.  My Dh will be with us, so he can push the stroller but I won't be able to carry things for an extended amount of time.

We plan on going during the week and we will be taking the Metro.  Yes, we are staying near the Ragean airport.  8-)

  • Just to clarify on the time issue, it's just the houses (like the reptile house, etc.) that open at 10 a.m.  The animals in the wild enclosures are definitely out earlier and are often easier to see first thing in the morning.

This is what I was going to say.  A reason to get there, say, around 9:00 or so is to get good parking, though you don't have to worry about parking - but another reason is that you can walk all over the zoo and see the animals that are outdoors at that time.  The actual buildings don't open until 10.  I think it's worth going early to beat the crowds, the heat, and the midday lag when all the animals seem to hide.

  • I am almost positive that there is no basket on the rental strollers.  I did a quick image search, and this is what they look like: http://www.tawbubby.com/2008/04/13/visitors-from-afar/

Must dos for our 21 month old are the panadas, the sloth bear (who is usually pacing back and forth right up against the glass), the lion cubs, the zebras when they are pretty close, and the elephants.  But I think it's mostly because those are some of her favorite animals.  She also loves playing in the giant pizza, which is by the farm.

What are you looking for in terms of restaurants?  Old Town Alexandria (just south of Reagan) has some amazing places to eat.  If you are out by the zoo, you'll find tons of places in Adam's Morgan as well.
