Ok, If you don't mind I need to know how you handled this stage with the boys (or your experience if they were not climbers).

They are climbing EVERYTHING, and unfortunately I can not change around my living room much more than I have.  (they are gated in the living room, and they refuse to stay in a play yard) They climb the couch to get to the stairs non stop.  By the time I get one down the other is halfway up.  Firday I actually removed the changing table from the living room, because they have started climbing to the top of that as well. I can officially say I really don't feel like I have enough hands.

Zach fell off the back of the couch this weekend and he has a good bruise on his face and a small cut. Sometimes, I think I cry more than him since I feel like it was my fault since I was grabbing the other from the stairs when it happened.

Between all the climbing, refusing naps, into everything, and extreme fussiness I am at my wits end.  I feel guilty for even wanting to come to work to get a break.  (I don't think it helped that DH had to work all weekend).

So basically any tips on staying paitent, and not pulling my hair out.

  • I feel ya, sister!

The boys were the age that your boys are during the summer so we were able to go outside a lot and get out all that energy... do you have room for a climber, slide thingy?  Lots of time outside, at Peekaboo or Greenlight.

As far as them falling and bumps and bruises... they are fine!  LOL... the boys bang and bump more often than I ever thought possible for two people and they are for the most part, over it before I am, and not any worse off for it...

Working DHs' is the hardest part, but when he is home, take the time to yourself... you need that time just as much as he needs the time with the boys.  Take a nap when they take a nap, don't worry about cleaning until after they go to bed at night...

    anything else? just ask :)

its tough but it gets better!

  • Thank you for responding.  I truly appreciate it.

We decided that we are going to modify our living room, by pulling the couches out from the walls.  I do have a few outside toys, that I think I will bring in for the winter.  I think I need to accept the fact that until they are a little older our living room will pretty much be a play room.

Now that they are getting past their cold, I will be able to get them outside again, which I agree will probably help.

Thank you again, and don't worry I am sure I will have more questions as we head into the terrible two's.

  • Yeah, the living room becomes a playroom unless you have a playroom that is easily accessible... which we didn't, but we luckily had an open concept so they could be playing and I could be cleaning and cooking, etc...

The thing I also found useful was to "bin" their toys and only let them have one or two bins out at a time so that there wasn't toy mania all over the living room!

  • We are trying to do the same thing with their toys. We currently have one bin that has toys in it, but my BIL and SIL are building them their own toy boxes.  I can NOT wait to get them, at least when they are in bed my house will look somewhat organized.
